XENA: THÀNATOS: Blood Kiss Chapter 2

Temple of Vesta, 25 years ago.

A dark, stormy night was hovering around the sacred building.

The unceasing rain seemed wanting to punish something, or someone.

Lightning was cutting the sky as slashes of divine wrath, and each thunder was shaking the temple columns as a prediction.

Inside, two vestals were attending a heavy injured woman.

“Do you think she will ever wake up from her heavy sleep, Priestess?” the younger one asked, while she was massaging Najara’s arms with perfumed oil.

Her breath was calm, so calm to make thinking about death.

Her skin, instead, was crossed by some small wrinkles around her eyes, and by some wounds still healing.

“We don’t know this, Maia…only Gods know the answ…”

Speech was suddenly dying in the Priestess throat. A blast of wind opened wide the temple doors, smashing them against the walls with a dull roar. Immediately, one of the big circular windows was shattered, and the rain was pouring inside, as a hostile flood.

The tide caused a whirlwind of darkness right in the middle of the room, as the storm generated a dark heart, beating furiously.

The vortex was dense, sticky, with metallic reflections looking like dark red veins.

There was a bitter smell, as burnt soil mixed with blood.

The vestals were screaming, some trying to run away, but they were incorporated by the vortex.

Their bodies were lifted in the air, turning around, their white robes ended up stained with blood.

They were spit out some moments later, lifeless, their bodies in unnatural positions, eyes wide open in fear.

Two vestals tried to help Najara, but her body was levitating in the air, lifted by an invisible strength.

The bandage slipped out of her arms, while her wounds were pounding, as fresh ones.

A sibilant voice broke the silence suddenly:

«She is the one who crossed the threshold. The one who shaped her destiny. The one who no longer is. And I…am the gate…»

The whirlwind became vaguely human: a tall figure, without a face, made of shadows and whines.

The figure outstretched a hand to Najara and slowly started drawing an incandescent symbol on her chest, shaped like an upside-down torch.

Her body froze. Then she opened her eyes. Not hers anymore.

They were black and full. Empty and devastating at the same time.

The vortex started to retreat slowly, until it disappeared completely.

Maia, the only survivor, was hiding behind one of the smallest altars, trembling and unable to move, or even cry.

She barely crawled out, until she reached Najara, who was stiff, and she brushed her face with two fingers, doubtfully.

The woman’s eyes opened again, and she grabbed Maia’s wrist, suddenly and roughly.

“Take me out.”

Queen Varia’s hut

“You can go; I’ll handle Xena by myself…”

Amazon guards took leave, watching the warrior with mockery and scorn.

“…Xena…I have nothing against you, you know, but you’re too impulsive, you don’t know many things…”

While she was talking, Varia was moving around Xena. She was brushing her hair, her skin, sure that the warrior was unable to move.

“You know we are going towards extinction…someone always tries to put an end to us all…do you remember Morlock (Xena ep. 6×11), and Bellerophon… huhn? (Xena ep. 6×15)”

“Hard to forget, but I cannot find sense in Najara…”

“Najara was our savior, when a long time ago we were attacked by yet another warlord”

“And who is he? Or was…”

“A roman. He came here with his legion, and with a chariot of ferocious beasts. Najara stopped his army and killed all those beasts, with her power.”

“What a coincidence…”

Xena was trying to free her wrists.

“In all of this, I can’t understand why you’re living in the middle of nowhere…”

Varia took a dagger, playing with it nervously.

“Najara saved us, but Artemis cursed us after killing those beasts.”

“Najara always brought the evil with her and…I’m surprised she’s still alive…”

“She’s a demigoddess…” the Amazon added, immediately attacked by Xena’s words.

“What are you talking about? She’s not a demigoddess, she never was!”

“How can you explain what she did for us, or what she’s just done? You should accept reality.”

Amazon guests’ hut

Gabrielle was tidying her saddlebag. Even if she was now a complete warrior, she never stopped writing: she got some new scrolls, choosing the less crumpled ones, nib and inkstand. She sat on her couch, placing the scroll on her legs: she wanted to restart writing the chants of the adventures shared with Xena, but she was feeling blocked.

“I can’t…”

With the tip of her nib, she pressed too much on the sheet, and suddenly someone knocked violently at the hut door.

Gabrielle was scared, and the nib pierced the scroll, hurting her.

“Who…who’s there?

“Najara”.

“Hold on…”

Before opening, she searched for something to dab her wound, using the scroll sheet, then she opened the door.

Najara was wearing the same dark clothes she had in the forest, but with her hood down, so Gabrielle could see her face clearly: she was pale, and her eyes were tired and circled. She wasn’t with short hair anymore and her scar on the cheekbone seemed still fresh.

“What do you want?”

“Being with Xena made you aggressive…”

“Just tell me what you want, Najara.”

“Talk to you. Can I come in?”

Gabrielle nodded, reluctantly.

When the woman came in, Gabrielle felt a cold shiver on her back, and she quickly closed the door.

Queen Varia’s hut

Xena was trying to take time and free her wrists, since the rope was tight and stinging like a thorn.

“What I have seen is not enough to believe Najara is a priestess, a goddess, or whatever! Plus, who was the roman?”

Varia smiled and shook her head, ignoring completely Xena’s question.

“You don’t understand…”

She turned away from the warrior, to suddenly turn around and throw her dagger, cutting the rope that trapped Xena’s wrists.

“Damn!”

“You lost your reflexes, princess…”

Xena’s wrists were bleeding, Varia ripped a strip off her clothes, then took Xena’s hands, coming closer and trying to dab her wounds. Xena tried to retreat.

“What the…?”

“Let me do it… Does it hurt…?

Xena didn’t reply. She was watching Varia taking care of her wounds, but she was doing it in a weird way. She was looking at her deeply, and her touch was gentle but firm; no one had ever taken care of her, excluding Gabrielle.

Xena was feeling embarrassed, and the amazon noticed that, taking advantage to come closer.

“This is my village, Xena, and you are the most welcome here. But you should ALWAYS remember I am the Queen…” she went closer to her lips.

“You’re too rebel to be it, Varia.”

“And you’re too arrogant to be a simple warrior. My sisters are dying and you’re questioning my role!”

“Why have you called me?

“You’re the only one who can understand what’s happening in my village.”

“So, the great Amazon Queen is not so sly, as she believes.”

“Don’t you dare, Xena!”

Varia and Xena were in front of each other, while Varia was keeping up Xena’s glance, she lowered her eyes, pleased by the Queen’s neckline.

“Nice clothes…”

“I can wear them.” Varia returned the glance, satisfied that the woman was impressed.

“Aham, you’re a Queen, after all.”

Varia came closer. The different heights made the amazon able to almost brush the warrior’s lips, in a challenging way.

Xena felt Varia’s warm breath on her mouth.

“Do you want to help us, or not? Make up your mind.”

Xena hesitated for a moment, then she replied.

“…so?” A dark smoke came out of Varia’s mouth, entering Xena’s one, who started coughing suddenly, forcing her to collapse on her knees.

Varia was looking at her with a strange expression, which didn’t belong to her, with an evil grin. She ended up attacking Xena, kicking her strongly on her belly, breaking her armor against the woman’s body. The strong pain made her throw up and faint.

**********

Amazon guests’ hut

“I missed you, Gabrielle…”

Najara was looking at her with shiny and touched eyes.

“How…how’s possible…what…?”

“What happened? Why am I alive? It’s the same thing that happened to you and Xena (Xena ep. 5×19: Looking death in the eye), your beloved was the one who made me unconscious, after all”

“It’s not Xena’s fault. It’s yours, after you have persisted in making the same mistakes that drove us apart.”

“So, did I deserve to stay trapped between life and death? You don’t know what I’ve been through…but death herself pitied me, Gabrielle, and wanted us to reconcile.”

“We haven’t reconciled, since we were never united. If you came here to claim what doesn’t belong to you, you can go!”

Najara went closer to Gabrielle, pointing her index to the scar on her face.

“This is one of the memories your sweet princess left me” she raised her voice, choked by her feelings.

She opened her clothes in front of Gabrielle, showing her body without breast, and full of burnt scars all over it.

“This is, instead, a memory from the long years in which my soul has been tormented and raped by the… Gods…of Hell!”

Then, she dressed up again.

The woman seemed confused. Her voice returned regular and calm again.

“…I’d have preferred to be dead, Gabrielle…can’t you feel a little bit of mercy? I’m human, after all…”

Najara brushed the girl’s face, who was touched on her most sensible part, so she caressed the woman’s scar in return.

“I’m very sad for you…I know what it’s like to be in Hell. I have seen what happens there.” (Xena ep. 5×01: Fallen Angel).

With genuine abandonment, Gabrielle hugged Najara, who tightened up to her in a long and unnatural embrace. She ended up blocking the girl’s body and made her faint: Gabrielle couldn’t move a single muscle and could not even talk, her eyes started rolling back, showing only the white side. When she fell on the floor, completely in trance, Najara grabbed her face, as if she wanted to break her neck. She kissed her roughly instead, moving her tongue into the girl’s mouth.

When she moved away, black smoke came out of her mouth, the same thing happened to Xena, while on Najara’s lips there was Gabrielle’s blood. She licked and swallowed it, as if it was the end of a great meal.

Then she took Gabrielle’s scroll, careless, leaving the girl on the floor and getting out of the hut.

Xena was regaining her senses, trying to understand where she was. Opening her eyes, she noticed it was night, and she was inside an Amazon hut. She couldn’t remember how she ended up there.

She couldn’t remember Varia, the murders, or Najara.

A feeling of extreme lightness made her realize she was without her armor and weapons, while a sharp and icy shiver was going through her body.

Despite the fireplace being on, and the flames burning, she was feeling very cold: nevertheless, she was feeling good, not in a feverish state.

She was getting off her bed, when she saw Gabrielle sleeping beside her; she looked at her for a long time, lingering on her open lips and on a shoulder pad down. She lowered it completely, uncovering part of the girl’s breast.

Xena’s hand moved against the girl’s lower part, brushing her gently but firmly, she perfectly knew her body, after all, and how it was vibrating. Not so much later, indeed, the girl was shaking against her hand, until she was completely awake.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing we didn’t do already a thousand times…” Xena kissed Gabrielle’s neck.

“Get your hands off me and don’t ever try to kiss me again!”

Xena was shocked. Despite their differences and disagreements, she has never refused her attention so far, not even once. But now it was different.

She saw the girl getting off the bed, trying to regain her composure and covering herself with her arms around the body.

“I…I don’t know what you want from me…no, I know it, but don’t you ever get closer! Get out of here!”

“Are you mad, what have you done?”

“I said get out!” Gabrielle’s voice seemed firm, then became scattering and insecure.

“I…I don’t recognize you…please go…”

Xena wasn’t upset, and she didn’t agree with her, immobilizing her with the pinch.

“You’re mine, and you are going to fulfill every wish I have.” she whispered in her ear. “I don’t want to fuck with a dead body, so now I will make pressure on your neck again, and you won’t complain.”

Gabrielle couldn’t believe what was happening, Xena had never been violent to her, nor vulgar, but now she seemed like another person, so she nodded, resigned. Xena was the strongest of the two, after all.

The warrior kept her word; when Gabrielle was trying to breathe again, she tightened her wrists.

“I can guarantee you it’s going to be exciting…violent, but pleasant…”

Gabrielle pretended to be submissive, waiting for Xena to be distracted, and tried to hit her with her elbow and run, but the woman grabbed her and blocked her from behind.

“Where do you want to go?” Xena blocked her completely, with her arms.

“Stop it…I don’t want to…” but the girl’s body was reacting in the opposite way, she was slowly melting against Xena’s one.

“Not true…” she kissed her neck, while still tightening her. She started to undress her, lowering the shoulder pads, slowly. Her other hand was going down between Gabrielle’s thighs, who was completely getting drunk of the warrior’s seduction.

“Xena…”

“I told you, it’s not true that you don’t want me, inside you everything is screaming the contrary…”

Xena’s hands were slipping firmly, hungrily, while a thrill was going through them both, but they didn’t seem to be alone.

There was something in the room, something in the air was vibrating like an ancient, dark whisper.

“It shouldn’t be like that, we are not ourselves, Xena…”

Xena stopped for a moment, her heavy breath against Gabrielle’s neck. Then she smiled, with a predatory essence in her movements and in her face traits.

“No, we’re not…or maybe we are, more than ever.”

Gabrielle tried to withdraw, but her hands were not responding. They were placed, instead, on Xena’s hips, pulling her closer.

Her body was leading her, responding to a dark call that she could no longer resist.

Xena pushed her slowly against the hut’s wall, lowering completely her corsage. The contrast between the texture and her naked skin seemed amplifying every sensation, every touch.

The warrior’s hand, now warm and alive, now icy like death, returned between Gabrielle’s legs, who was panting, feeling she was losing something, or maybe she was entering into the forbidden and eternal at the same time, where pleasure and death intertwined.

“What you want from me is not love, isn’t it? It’s something burning inside you, consuming you…”

Xena didn’t reply with words, but she pushed Gabrielle on the bed without softness, finding herself above the girl.

Xena’s kisses were dirty, rough, inhuman. Her hands were just making their way into the girl’s flesh, who made a scream coming from her lower belly, a mixture of bliss and terror. Her body was now an entire dimension.

Xena grabbed her face, with her fingers soaked of desire just consumed, and bit Gabrielle’s lower lip, while she returned her the same, grabbing Xena’s upper lip between her teeth.

They kissed in this way, with hunger, violence and slowness, without mercy, while warm blood was pouring from their mouths.

Gabrielle looked at Xena with fear and devotion, when everything became black in front of their eyes. Everything was turned off.

A PERFECT LIE: CHAP. 3 (ENGLISH VERSION)

1
First impact

That morning Ruby woke up very early. She dressed up with her dry and clean clothes, placing the ones borrowed from Diana on a chair in her bedroom, then she took her phone from the bag, starting a call.
Diana was leaning with her shoulder against the door side, wearing only an oversize T-shirt, watching her.
“Are you in a rush?”
“I must go to the office.”
“Do you want me to give you a ride?”
“Not necessary.”
“It is instead…I’m sorry for tonight…”
“Seriously?” she asked ironically, while she invited Diana to shut up, gesticulating with her hand.
“Yes, probably I’ll be there some minutes later. See you.” The phone call was quick.
“You do not want me to give you a ride.”
“No. Definitely, no.”
“Who did you call?”
“Not your business.”
After the last firm denial, Diana stretched her arm to the door side, trying not to make her go out.
“If you want…I can make it up…”
They looked in each other’s eyes for a moment, with the same depth of the night before, and it was as if they have known each other since forever; the same familiar sense of who feels the other person as a safe place. Then, a klaxon coming from the street broke that kind of magic.
“Who do you think I am? Let me go!”
This time she realized that resisting was useless, so she tried to take time.
“Can I call you later?”
“If you want to show me something else, yes. Otherwise, no.”
“You are so categorical.”
“I must go. Talk soon.”
Ruby glanced Diana with disapproval, then, without adding anything else, she left closing the door.
She looked back for a moment, as if she wanted Diana to open the door again to stop her and let her in. But her wish was not fulfilled, so she walked directly to the exit on the street.
She waited for some minutes, then finally, a taxi arrived. Without even waiting for the car to stop completely, she got in, with the taxi driver looking at her surprised and with a funny face.
“We are in a rush?”
“Yes. Can you drive me to the Times office? Thank you.”
The taxi driver nodded, but then he turned the car off.
“What? Something wrong?” Ruby spoke to the man, looking in his eyes through the rearview mirror.
“I think you must get out of the car, Miss.”
“What?” Ruby didn’t know if she should laugh or get angry. She was surprised.
“There is someone waving at me, I think you know her.”
“I don’t care! Please start the car.”
“If I were you, I’d get out of the car, she was not chasing the others.”
“The…others…?” Ruby was confused.
“Do you know her…?”
“Yes…well…let’s say so. If you want to get out…”
Ruby looked at Diana through the window, she was waiting for her on the stairs at the entrance of the house, smiling. Then, sighing, she opened the door and went out of the car, going to her.
“So?”
“So, I’ll drive you there. Better, you drive!” and she threw her the car keys.

They were on West 4th Street, and they ignored each other for a good part of the trip.
Diana often watched Ruby insistently, while Ruby was pretending of not feeling her glance, weighting on her instead, until, tired of feeling embarrassed, decided to do the most obvious thing, turning on the radio.
Useless action, Diana turned it off immediately. Ruby turned on her, completely annoyed.
“I liked that song!”
“Sure…” replied ironically.
“You’re exhausting, Diana…”
“No, I just want to talk to you.”
“I don’t want to listen. I just want to arrive to the office. Because of you, I’ll be later than I thought.”
“Since you are with me, they will believe that you received interesting information from me. They won’t complain.”
“You think so?” What’s this noise?” the car was making a buzz, becoming more and more intense and annoying.
“Don’t know. Not my car.” Ruby looked at her badly.
“It belongs to the department. Don’t panic.”
Ruby started touching the car devices, turning on the air conditioning as well, trying to understand from where the noise was coming from.
“You know, my father was used doing the same. He always broke everything.”
“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear you.” She was touching, pushing, and activating buttons and handles, under Diana’s annoyed glance.
“I think we should find a mechanician.” Diana said, while she was absently looking out of the window. She noticed the other cars were running way faster.
“Sorry but… how fast are you going?”
“About forty miles.”
“Weren’t you in a rush?”
“The point is that this wreck is not going faster than this!” Ruby was annoyed.
“There is an underground parking space not far from here, we can leave the car there and then I’ll call my colleague” Diana placed a hand on Ruby’s one, while she was steering.
The touch made her bounce.
“Are you nervous?” Diana didn’t let go.
“What you think?” Ruby tried to push Diana’s insistent contact away with her elbow, but she didn’t accept it, making a more daring physical contact, brushing her groin and trying to unbutton her pants.
Ruby was not believing at such a daring attempt, and that part of her who liked those kinds of attentions made her lose control of the car, while she was going down the parking ramp quickly, noticing that something was not right.
“Shit!! The brakes are not working!”
Panicking and rushing, she tried to search for the handbrake blindly, but Diana stopped her.
“Try not to lose your mind and do what I say!” Diana’s cold blood was enviable.
“Slowly let the accelerator go and climb down the gear!”
Ruby did it without talking, until the car slowed down as much as needed to let Diana insert the handbrake.
The car suddenly stopped at a few centimeters from a concrete column. But it was not over yet. The shock made Diana notice something strange coming out from the dashboard: a thin and weird thread, almost hidden, that was not part of the car.
Ruby watched Diana curiously, while she seemed to be very sure of herself.
“There’s something strange…”
“What you mean?”
The thread was connected to a device, hidden among the wires, not leaving doubts about what was happening.
“Go out of this trap, now! There’s a bomb in here!”
While Ruby didn’t have any problem opening the door, Diana couldn’t get out, because her door was blocked, so she lost precious time using the driver’s one.
“Run, shit! What are you doing here?”
“Helping you, dumbass!”
Ruby threw Diana out of the car grabbing her arms, and she lost her balance after jumping out, falling on her.
They didn’t have any time to look at themselves that a light smoke first, and some sparkles then, became a huge roar, while the car was on fire and some pieces of the car body were thrown all around.

The two women lost consciousness for some minutes.
The smoke and pungent smell of fire was spreading through all the lowest part of the building.
Diana was the first to regain consciousness, and seeing the other one on the floor, supine, ran towards her, despite not being fully ok after the explosion.
She made sure Ruby was breathing, so she tried to wake her up, shaking her lightly.
Not receiving positive signs, she panicked, screaming loud.
“Ruby, wake up…shit, wake up!” she looked around desperately, to see if the aids were there and to search for her phone into the pockets, but then she felt a hand on her.
“Diana, what…? Ruby was in a state of confusion.
“Can you get up?” not receiving any positive reply, she helped her to sit, and then she saw her arm was bleeding, so she ripped a piece of her shirt, to plug the wound and medicate it temporarily.
“Now lean against me, we have to get away immediately from here!”
The smoke was increasing, so they rushed to find the exit, through the labyrinth of cars and debris, despite the view was very unclear.
Once out of the area, they found the aids and a couple of police squads, who immediately recognized Diana. One of the cops got closer.
“I could imagine all but to see you here. What the fuck happened?”
“Someone placed a bomb into the car, and I think I know who he is.”
“Who? That kid? Come on, he’s dumb!”
“He’s not dumb, Steve! Don’t try to make me pass as a visionary!”
“You’re sure it was him, but…”
“I’m not sure, shit! Ok, enough! I will go to the police station asking for a lift to one of the cars and then I’ll leave my witness”.
“Not needed, now try to get better and send it by mail. I’ll take it.”
While they were talking, Steve waved his head towards Ruby, with a giggle, while she was receiving medication from an operator of the ambulance.
“Who is she?”
“Not your business.”
“A new “friend”?”
“You should learn to make your own business, for once.”
“Have you already dumped the other?”
“Tell me, Steve, how’s your wife?” this time Diana was smiling ironically, getting an embarrassed silence from the cop.
In the meantime, Ruby was feeling observed and, without drawing attention, walked to Diana, naturally.
“You know this wasn’t an accident, right?” Diana nodded.
“By the way, while I was getting medication, I saw a young guy on a motorcycle, who was watching you from the sidewalk in front of us…”
“Is he still here?” Diana was visibly shacking.
“Don’t know, don’t think so…”
“Let’s go!”
2
Street guys

“How’s your arm? All ok? You were bleeding much.” Diana was worried about the woman, but anxious for what she told her before.
“Yes, but you still didn’t tell me who is this Lucas Walsh.”
“He’s the piece of shit who murdered my daughter. Don’t ask me if I’m sure he was the one, because this question makes me lose my nerves. Where have you seen him?”
“Over there.” Ruby waved in the direction of a narrow street, that was passing through old buildings, crossing the entire district in the complete darkness.
“I’ll go alone, if you don’t feel like it.”
“No, don’t mention it, going into the dangerous streets of the Bronx is my favorite hobby!” Diana smiled, despite everything, until they went inside that street.

Diana was silent for a long time, focused on looking into that heavy twilight, searching for clues that could lead her to her man, until she heard clearly two kids’ voices, from a narrow alley.
“We can make good money with this, to divide with Rey and Vi. What you think?”
“It can be enrolled, leave it, Alec!”
“Don’t say bullshit, Cat! We didn’t find it in Manhattan’s high districts!” replied the other kid.
Diana tried to hide herself into the shadow as much as possible, and she clearly saw two guys in their twenties, talking in front of a motorcycle. Blinded by rage, she matched it with the one belonging to Lucas Walsh, so she decided to come forward, but Ruby grabbed her wrist.
“What do you want to do? They’re surely armed.”
“I just want to talk to them. Let me go!” Diana didn’t realize she raised her voice, alerting the two guys in front of her: a blonde one with gentle traits, and the other with darker skin.
The last one immediately jumped, while the blonde one was still, as to challenge Diana, waiting for her to be in front of him.
“What the hell, Alec? Come on! Let’s go!”

“Guys! Stop! This is the police!”
The two guys were running, but Diana was running quick as well behind them.
“Why are you running away, Cat?”
“I don’t want troubles! Not today!”
“Fuck you, Luis!” the blonde stopped, then turned around and stayed standing still, with a closed punch and the other hand behind his back, ready to use the gun, waiting for Diana.
The darker one took only a few steps ahead, then stopped and walked beside the other.
“Now I like you!” Alec smiled proudly.
“We won’t do anything. If things will get bad, worse for her…but she doesn’t seem dangerous…”
“Always the same. Always different from the others! I can’t believe I’m indulging you!”
Diana reached the two guys. She tried to breathe.
“Why didn’t you stop? I only want to ask you a couple of questions, nothing more.”
“The ones like you don’t ask questions.” Alec replied firmly.
“You’re right, and in other circumstances would be like that, but…”
“But?” Cat pressed.
“Wait, who the fuck’s coming?” Alec saw Ruby coming, with his eye corner, and was decided to use the gun, but Cat, knowing his friend, grabbed his wrist.
“Let’s go, what do you think these dumbasses could tell you?”
“Please, don’t interfere, ok?”
“You perfectly know Noa didn’t hang out with these guys! I don’t understand what you’re looking for!”
Noa…?” Cat whispered the girl’s name with strangled voice.
“Do you know her?” Diana opened her big dark eyes, shook Cat grabbing him by his shoulders, while the guy was silent. Then, he regained himself.
“No, I…don’t…” for a few seconds he crossed Alec’s disapproval glance, but then decided to speak.
“I’m going to tell you all I know, but then you must forget you’ve ever seen us…”
“Look at this one!” Ruby broke in, almost mocking at him, receiving Diana’s disapproval glance.
“I don’t work in your district, and I have no reason on investigating about you, but if you saw or heard something, please tell me…”
“Please... Noa is…was…my daughter.”
The two guys looked at each other, then, Cat decided to talk first, with the clear disappointment of Alec, painted on his face.
“Well, I…we…don’t know her, but we were at Mott Haven…”
“Shit, Cat! Do you understand that she wants to trick us?”
He kept talking, ignoring his friend.
“…I saw two guys walking away…the bigger one had a girl on his shoulders…maybe she was too drunk or high to move. Or maybe…”
“Maybe?” Diana pressed.
“…maybe she was already dead, because the guy standing beside the bigger one was crying…and I heard him spelling that name…Noa.”
“Where have you seen her exactly?” Diana’s glance was desperate, and Cat could feel it.
“Near the North underground station, half an hour from here, there is an abandoned house. Everyone calls it The Black House.”
“The black house?” Ruby was doubtful.
“Yes, it’s called in this way because scary noises and verses are coming from there.” Alec intervened, seeing his friend seriously determined to help Diana, so he tried to be a little softer.
“Even if it’s called in this way, is not dismissed as the others around, it’s very beautiful instead. Surely belongs to some rich man, who’s pretending it’s abandoned…you know?” Cat was going on.
“Ok, thank you. You can go.”
“You don’t have to tell us” Alec was very annoyed by Diana’s authoritative reply.
“I hope we could help you in some way.” Cat waved to his friend. Walking fast, they completely disappeared in the street dim light, in a few seconds.
“What are we doing about this?” Ruby climbed on the motorcycle, as if she could drive it.
“Get down!” Diana was annoyed by the journalist’s shallow move, then she took her phone and called the police station.

Smell of the death

Lucas was a loner, not for his choice; life had cornered him more than once.
His only “friends”, with time, have become dealers, backers, and prostitutes. People who always wanted something from him; who “worked” with him or for him.
Liam represented that brother he always wished he could have: a safe place where to hide when all around was becoming a suffocating spiral.
Nothing was able to touch Lucas’ sensibility, but that skinny and fragile kid, maybe because Liam could see who he was, some time ago.
When he was a kid, being an only child was making him feel different from his school mates, who, on the contrary, had brothers and sisters.
Lucas was shy and clumsy with everyone, he didn’t have someone to play with, a friend or a confident.
When his parents were fighting, he was closing his room’s door and was bringing his hands on his ears, imagining of having another life.
Despite nothing was missing on the material plan, everything was missing on the emotional one.
Growing up, and becoming more and more aware of what was around him, he often saw his father coming home stained with blood, and when Lucas was running to hug him, the man pushed him away, as if he was a stranger.
It was pointless to search for comfort from his mother who, after spending many years in tears, decided to change life, going out late at night, with provocative clothes, to meet strangers. He soon found out from his house’s staff, who was gossiping, that they were his mother’s lovers.
This was one of the many scenes Lucas attended to when he was a child, and that were repeated through the years, until the day when he was a teenager and he saw his mother Grace, dying.
Lucas was the one finding her dead body.
The woman was lying on her bed, in her luxurious room, and what the kid could feel, even before seeing her, was the bitter and sickening smell of cigarettes extinct hours before, even if there was no ashtray.
He went closer, immediately noticing his mother’s pale skin, her eyes closed and a hand on her stomach, holding the fabric of her silk dressing gown, as if the woman could have felt an intense pain, before dying.
He could not even think of trying to help her, since three big men entered in the room silently, followed by his father, who jumped in front of him and started to slap his face.
“You should thank me.”.
The three men wrapped Grace’s dead body in the sheets and took her away, in front of Lucas’ eyes, who was hurt on his face and in his heart.
In that moment, the kid could see many memories of his mother sliding in front of him, as if he had completely forgotten them before.
Grace was almost never smiling and, when it was happening, his husband was used to put her in her place, making her notice how dysfunctional their relationship was, with his narcissistic and arrogant behavior. How wrong she was.
Lucas could not find any trace of happy moments in his mind, happy episodes with his parents, not even calm moments.
He could only remember fights behind their bedroom door, his dad going out slamming it, and his mother calling to hug him. But it was not long enough, because the woman immediately started to use alcohol and cigarettes, completely forgetting about him.
Lucas loved her, as a child who loves and justifies a parent who, for a million reasons, ended up with her back against the wall.
When his mother died, even his back ended up against that same wall.

September 11th

When they arrived at Diana’s place, the door didn’t want to open.
“Shit, it’s been a year since we have this problem, and the administrator still didn’t change the damn door lock!”
“Wait, I’ll try.” Ruby moved Diana’s hand softly, and she brushed her hand back, leaving the keys fall on the floor, but they seemed not to care, as their hands entwined.
“Diana…” each time their eyes crossed, it felt like a spell, that was bringing them somewhere else, to make them suddenly fall back into reality.
“Leave it.” Diana lowered, got the keys, and this time the door opened without issues.

Entered in the apartment, Diana turned one of the lamps on, adjusting the soft light, threw her bag and jacket on the sofa, then she sat there. She removed her shoes and laid on it. Ruby closed the door behind her softly, leaning on it with her back. She knew some complaining was about to come.
“You…you’re not attracted to me, aren’t you?” Diana passed her hands on the temples, as if a strong headache was about to arrive.
“No. Not true. And today was way too heavy to talk about these things.” Ruby was looking to the floor and to the fugues between one tile and the other, in the attempt to escape Diana’s glance.
“Why do you want to see me, if you don’t want me?”
“You only want to fill a void.”
“You really think you can replace my daughter? Watch me when I speak!”
“Yes. I do.” Ruby wanted to challenge Diana, going closer.
“A son cannot be replaced by anyone in the world. Do you know that? Don’t think so, you haven’t children.” Diana knitted her forehead, and two light vertical lines between her eyebrows made her look older, more mature than her age.
“I don’t have children, but I was a daughter. A parent cannot be replaced as well.”
“Perfect, so what are we talking about, Ruby?”
In the end she sat beside Diana, collapsing among the pillows, heavily tired.
“Your mother replaced you, right?”
“What?” Ruby was confused by the question.
“When your father died, and she started a new life, you felt replaced, didn’t you?”
“How the fuck you…?”
“I got informed about you as well.”
Diana got up, took a green folder among some books from one of the bookshelves in the living room, under the incredulous eyes of the journalist, then she threw it on Ruby’s legs.
“But the difference between me and you…” Diana went on “is that I am driven by a real interest about you, you are only interested in writing a good article, instead.”
“What a big son of a…”
Ruby, shocked and dazed, was aware that she was violated in her private sphere, understanding for the first time how was not to be the one who was writing the article, but the one who was damaged by it.

Charles Evans was only a cop trying to do his job, when on September 11th, 2001, in the attempt to maintain the order, his Smith & Wesson accidentally hit a pregnant woman, who was running, trying to save herself.
He thought nobody saw that, in the confusion, not considering his partner, Idan Bitton, was just behind him.
His conscience didn’t allow him to do his job as before: he was often absent, and when he was working his breathe smelled like alcohol.
After a few months from the accident, Charles was dismissed, and his days were passing lazily, between a bottle of Vodka and half-a-score cans of beer. His wife Ava could not bear this anymore, she could not see him on the sofa, between the disorder and the smell. She was initially coming home only to cook lunch and dinner to her daughter, but then her coming backs became more and more occasional: Ruby had to learn to cook and program the washing machine by herself, because her mother left.
But she was not the only one who left. Soon all Evans family just ceased to exist.
It was about 19 when Ruby came back from school: a simple Autumn evening as many others.
The lights were all off. The apartment was enlightened only by the weak rays of light, coming from the streetlamps.
No sounds. Only the squeaking of the door, closing behind her.
“Dad…?”
Ruby tried to turn the light in the living room on, but it didn’t work.
She remembered that the week before, the electric company sent the countless reminder for the nonpayment of the bills.
She took her phone, trying to make some light with the display, walking slowly through the corridor to reach the bedrooms.
“Dad, are you sleeping?”
Ruby’s hesitant hand opened lightly the bedroom door, until it was wide open, while the phone enlightened the middle of the room.
Ruby’s scream choked with weeping filled the building.

“I am aware it’s not easy for such a young girl to find out her dad’s dead body.”
“Why are you doing this to me, Diana…?” Ruby’s voice was trembling.
“How did you find your dad?”
“Isn’t… isn’t it in your dossier? Why are you asking this to me?”
“I want you to tell me.”
Ruby didn’t reply.
“Fine. Here it goes: «Charles Evans. 49 years old male found hanging from the chandelier with a rope made by electric wires, in his bedroom. Beside him, a scissor ladder, most probably used for the preparation…»”
“Stop it…”
«The violent action of the electric wires caused the hyoid bone fracture. »
Ruby lowered her head, with her elbows placed on her knees. She looked beaten.
“How did you feel when you found him? Here it’s written that the daughter (you) was in a sever state of shock…”
The woman was showing her uneasiness explicitly, entwining her fingers, as to clean them from something dirty.
Diana noticed that but kept browsing the documents carefully.
“After the episode, until you became an adult, you were under treatment with Dr. Parker and…”
“I wish I could see you…”
“Excuse me?” Diana pretended she didn’t understand.
“…find your father hanged in front of you, completely cyanotic and…”
“I saw many of them during my career. And you forget I also saw my daughter.”
“But I was 18 years old!” she shouted.
“You cannot resist. Isn’t it, Ruby?”
The journalist was gesticulating nervously, then she got up, run to the bathroom slamming the door, to place her soapy hands under the water, brushing them until they were bleeding.
Grimaces of pain, tears, and sobs, didn’t cease until Diana opened the door looking at Ruby, who exchanged glance, with her black make-up pouring from the corner of her eyes, along with tears.
Diana didn’t say a word. She hugged the woman from behind, bringing her arms on the front and picking Ruby’s ones, getting her white shirt wristbands dirty with blood.
They stayed like that until Ruby, raising her face to the mirror and seeing that scene reflected, tried to wriggle out, but Diana didn’t let her, until she gave up. She regained her breathe, finding herself in front of the woman, who was looking at her with sweetness and eyes full of tears.
Diana felt an infinite tenderness for Ruby, and held her tight, transported by her feelings, not imagining that she would have been returned, until she felt Ruby’s hands behind her back, and her face resting on her breast. She could feel her warm breath on her skin.
Diana closed her eyes, curving her neck backwards, letting herself go into that long and desperate hug, which felt like love, comfort, and consolation. Warm and familiar. Pulsing.
“Why…why, Diana?
“It’s the weight you carry inside you…” Diana took Ruby’s face between her hands. They were both full of tears.
“…I know that weight and I felt it…you haven’t to run from me, I can feel you…” she hugged her tight once more.
Ruby didn’t say anything, Diana’s words and her warmth were making her feel safe. At the same time, she understood that Diana’s intentions were not harming her, but they were going to let the pain go out, along with her sense of guilt that was oppressing her since she was young.
Ruby could not cry after his father’s death, not even after a long time. She believed that putting the mask of a strong and fearless woman, she could have moved on, but the seed of pain had grown up to the excess, also invading her adult life.
Diana knew that, because the same seed was growing inside her, after Noa’s death.

A PERFECT LIE: Chap. 2 (ENGLISH VERSION)

VIDEO PROMO:

1 Reminiscence

I arrive at the entrance of Central Park, thinking to find her there, the crazy one instead seems to be gone inside. After walking a little, indeed, I find her on Gapstowe Bridge.
I wasn’t here in the early morning before, there is no one around.
Except for her.
She looks under the bridge, as if she is about to jump; if there was a great height, she would have probably done that. Or I’d have killed myself while trying to save her.
I can feel her mental absence even from a distance.
I don’t know if I can feel that since I know her well, or because this is the impression that anyone could feel.
“Where is the car?”
“Are we arrived at this point? You don’t even ask me how I feel…”
“Have you ever asked yourself how I was feeling in this last year and half?”
“You’re right…forgive me…” she cries.
Red eyes, smudge make-up, her shirt stained of don’t-know-what, are not sufficient to make me understand what happened.
“Anyway, I’m here…” I can’t help but making her feel my presence, something still links us, after all. Or maybe not. Because what I say is not noticed.
“It’s not good for you to stay here, we should go home, Diana…”
“I cannot forget. I don’t want to…you haven’t seen her…” she watches under the bridge again, as if Noa’s body was there, again.
No, I haven’t seen her, but I knew in what conditions she has been found: after exhausting research lasted a couple of months, the girl was fished out of the lake, under Gapstowe Bridge. She was found by Diana, with tied wrists and her mouth sealed with tape.
Hit by a bullet on her chest, but the cause of death was overdose of cocaine.
She has told me, after our first acquaintance.
My investigation did not bring me the expected results, since as I thought, police was hiding the details.
The several articles written by colleagues, were stating that the victim was one of Diana’s relatives…but I couldn’t think she was her daughter, back then.
I come close to her, more than what I have done lately. I can’t even remember the last time I did it, so I decide to be brave, I place my arm around her shoulders, and she turns to me. She hugs me. Looks up and watches me. Her eyes are wonderful, even if sad and full of tears. She wants to say something, but she doesn’t. I want to kiss her, but I don’t. She understands I won’t do it, and she looks down. I wipe her tears away with my thumbs and she lays her head on my chest.
“Come on, let’s go to take the car.”

Diana’s car is on 5th Avenue, near a traffic light, next to the sidewalk.
Just when I try to understand what happened, I see the police coming.
Some guys get off the car, to be policemen they are weird: one is big with a huge beer tummy, the other two are not very tall but strong, one of them having a blonde tuft of hair.
“Is it yours?”
“Yes.”
“Some shopkeepers reported it, but no one was able to tell us what happened.”
“Well, I don’t…” the guy with the big tummy notices Diana. I can see he’s looking at her interested.
“You are…were detective Bitton! What did you do? Did you get drunk again, huhn?” if only he didn’t add a stupid laughter to the unlucky sentence, Diana wouldn’t have felt offended.
“Motherfucker!” I have never seen her spitting into someone’s face, and the big tummy guy doesn’t take it very well, he immediately tries to jump on her, but the other two policemen and I walk in the middle.
“Who the fuck you think you are, asshole?”
“Thank the fact you’re a woman and you’re not alone” the big tummy guy cleans his face from Diana’s spit, pouring on his nose’s side.
“I should have fired you when still…”
“Shut up, Bitton!” the guy doesn’t want to stop it, so I decide to intervene.
“Enough. We’re here to take the car and leave.”
“How do you think you can do it?” The blonde policeman waves his foot in the front wheels’ direction: they are punctured.
“Something’s strange also on the car hood” he adds with a stupid smirk.
“What the fuck happened, Diana?” I can’t understand. She talked about an accident, but all I can see is confused and absurd.
Punctured wheels. Heavy dent on the car hood. Nothing that makes me think Diana has lost control of the car. Everything seems happened “later” and not “during”.
“I…can’t…can’t remember…”
“Let me call you a tow truck” the blonde guy walks away with his cellphone in a hand, with the other hand, instead, gives a light friendly punch to the big tummy guy, who’s still looking at Diana. The three policemen walk away, once they reach enough distance, I decide to talk to her.
“Would you explain me?” she doesn’t say a word, goes opening the trunk and pulls out an iron bar.
“I hit the car.”
“You…what? Since when you go around with this shit?”
“Since when I haven’t a gun anymore.”
“What the fuck does it mean? Are you kidding me? Didn’t Steve get you one, recently?”
Steve is one of the few policemen Diana is in good terms with, after being dismissed from the police.
“Hello?!?”
“I, well…I think I lost it! Why are you fucking looking at me like this?” I know she gets defensive when she is about to lie. This is one of those moments.
“Bullshits! Tell me what the fuck have you done to that gun!” without even realizing it, I start yanking her shoulders, and she burst out laughing in my face.
“I sold it.”
“Congratulations, a great idea!” I am getting mad, because that smile on her lips turns into a laughter, but I can’t find anything to laugh about.
“You’re still funny when you get mad” I turn my face around to avoid looking at her and get even madder than I am already.
She gets closer. She’s in front of me, at few centimeters, when I feel her hand in my hair, while she is pushing my head to her face. She kisses me on my lips, and I can’t understand anything for a moment, so I let her do it. It didn’t happen in such a long time, that I lost count. But when I’m losing my mind and the kiss becomes deeper, I regain consciousness.
I feel her bitter tongue. In that moment I put an end to that kiss without sense. It’s not the first time.
“You’re high again! Shit!”
“So what?”
“When I lower my defense down, I realize you’re the usual asshole!”
“You still haven’t lost the habit to judge me…”
“No, because who you are has ruined our lives! You get high, sell the only weapon that could be useful and walk around with an iron bar in the trunk! Why? How did you use it for? I want an explanation, quickly!”
“For HIM…”
“He was exonerated.”
“Noa…it was him! You know it!”
“He’s just a kid! You could never find concrete proofs!”
“You perfectly know they prevented me! In any case, I found his new home, and last night I found him here, dealing in this area.”
“And you got your chance to stock up.”
“Yeah, I did it to get close to him, then things got bad, he almost killed me…and…”
We get interrupted by the guys of the tow truck. Of course, I should pay for the removal and storage costs. Diana changes her mood again, because she feels bad for that, but she doesn’t do anything for things to change, after all.
I take her by the arm, and I ask her to follow me.
“What the fuck are you doing?”
“Now we go home and then you have to explain me all that happened.”

I never know when to believe Diana, or not. Her story seems reliable, but her habit to lie never passed. After trying to buy drugs, Diana tried to hit the kid with the iron bar, but he managed to run away.
“It went well for you.”
“I still have perfect reflexes. I managed to get in the car. I ran after him for three blocks, I almost hit him with the car…then…”
“Then…what?”
“I had a panic attack and I stopped…then I simulated an accident.”
“Pray that insane won’t denounce you.”
Lucas Walsh was a 20 y/o kid with Irish origins. From Diana’s investigation, we found out he was the son of a mugwump of Irish Mob. Mostly, he was dealing, but he didn’t subtract himself from other illegal activities. The last murdered kid, the one Diana was investigating on when we have met, was going to the same high school Lucas was going to, with the difference that he was an avid repeater. Noa was going to the same institute, and she knew them both. It was not difficult to combine the elements that brought to those results. Then things got complicated when also Noa’s dead body, disappeared.
“I could have killed him, if…”
“…if you weren’t high.”
“Ruby, fuck!”
“It’s the truth! You want to say it’s not like that?”
“That damned has a great strength to be a kid.”
I stop the car, we arrived home.
I feel terribly tired, in pieces. Weak. As if a mountain fell on me.
I rest my head on the steering wheel.
“I can’t take it anymore.”
2 All in one night

Diana took one photo frame and handed it to Ruby, without saying a word.
The photo portrayed the woman and her daughter, when she was still a child.
“She resembles you a lot…”
“Resembled” she added, with strangled voice.
“I…don’t know what to say…I’m so sorry…”
“You don’t have to, I am sorry enough. Want some?”
She poured Jack Daniels in a glass.
“No, thank you. I don’t like it.”
“Really? Beautiful and faultless?”
Diana smiled sarcastically.
“And you? Beautiful and faulty…?” Ruby couldn’t help it.
“You can’t even imagine…” she leaned towards the sofa with bottle and glass in her hands, to sit near Ruby, maintaining some distance.
“Alcohol is the only thing that makes me feel less lonely.”
“Isn’t there anyone in your life?”
“No, only my ex-husband who bothers me sometimes…but I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t know you, after all.” She sipped the whiskey, then she poured some more and swallowed it all again.
“I’m not interested in your love affairs. You’re the one who wanted to meet me.”
“Yeah. I don’t even know why. Maybe…well, doesn’t matter. I know you’re a great journalist…”
“So, you did research about me…” she smiled.
“Of course. Anyway, I want to show you something.”
She took the notebook, put the password, and Noa’s crime scene photos were immediately shown.
Ruby suddenly understood Diana was filling herself with alcohol to bear the vision, so she went close to her.
Then, Noa’s pictures series started, she was naked, laid on the morgue’s cot, supine: yellow skin with hypostatic stains, generated by the corpse’s pressure, she seemed only a piece of meat.
The two women were in silence, only interrupted by the “click” from the pad and by the light coming from the laptop.
Ruby tried to swallow, but there was no spittle in her mouth.
“Are…are there also photos from the autopsy?”
“Photos and clip, if you’re interested.”
Diana didn’t wait for the woman’s reply and clicked on another folder on the desktop, then she started one of the videos with a couple of doctors harnessed for the occasion and the camera switching to Noa’s naked breast.
The image was not in high quality, but everything was clear enough.
When one of the doctors was getting close to Noa’s body, with the scalpel in his hand, Diana took the bottle and filled a glass of Jack Daniels, that swallowed all suddenly, while the camera zoomed on the doctor’s hand, who started to open the rib cage with the scalpel, with a sharp “Y” cut.
Skin and adipose tissue seemed like butter to the doctor’s touch, who easily cut the nerves with scissors, until the rib cage was open.
When the first internal organs were extracted, Ruby had a retch that couldn’t hold, throwing up on the floor.
“I had the same reaction the first time.”
“Shit, this is horrible” she cleaned her mouth with her hand.
“Even the second, and the third…now I can bear it, but only thanks to the alcohol.”
“Why are you watching again this horror?”
“So, I can realize my failure as a mother…”
There was a brief silence.
“Let me clean, you can go to freshen up. Make yourself at home.”

Under the warm shower, she was expecting to wash away the cruel images just seen.
Ruby took some shower gel from the dispenser and strongly rubbed her hands. Then her body. Then again, her hands, with strength, again and again, making them bleed.
“Shit!”
Scared, she looked around and took the first towel she could find, to dab her wounds.
“Great! Of course, white, of all colors!”
“All ok?” Diana knocked on the door, but Ruby was distracted and didn’t hear anything, so, worried, the woman opened it a little bit. Sufficient to have a conversation, without invading personal space.
“Ruby??”
“Yes, yes! I just need to wash my clothes…can I use your washing machine?”
“No problem, are you sure you’re ok?”
“Yes.”
Diana wasn’t convinced, but she didn’t insist. She was drunk, and it has been years since the last time someone visited her.
Being intrusive with Ruby could make her run away. She didn’t want to. But for what reason?
“I got you some of my clothes. We have the same size, more or less.”

Ruby came out of the bathroom, making sure the wounds on her hands were not visible.
Diana was a little drunk, but she was a cop, after all.
“I made you a cup of warm tea.”
“Oh, well, thank you.”
“I haven’t only alcohol here, if this is what you think.”
“I don’t think anything” both sat at the kitchen table.
“Why did you show me that video?”
“You were curious, no?”
“Not to see a slaughtered teenager.”
“Since the first time we met, you didn’t do anything else than getting involved in my stuff!”
“You let me get involved.”
“Only to avoid that your paparazzi nature could make damages spreading the wrong information, what do you think?”
“Ok, enough! Thanks for the tea. Don’t worry, I will pretend that I don’t know anything!”
“You can’t. Now you’re involved. Moreover, you’re leaving with my clothes…”
Ruby got up, removed her t-shirt throwing it on the table, staying half naked in front of Diana, who lowered her eyes.
“Please, get dressed…let’s talk again tomorrow. You can use my bed, I have to do some research.”
Ruby knocked her hand on the table, starting to scream.
“How do you think I can sleep, after all I’ve just seen?”
“I can give you some good pills I use…”
“Your bed, your pills…you’re crazy!”
“Maybe, but it’s not me who’s screaming half naked in the apartment of an almost stranger. Now, please cover yourself up” she handed her the t-shirt, noticing the wounds on her hands. But she didn’t react.
“Your cop attitude is not working with me!”
Diana got up and placed herself in front of Ruby, looking at her straight in the eyes. The women had almost the same height.
“If I wanted to use my cop attitude, I wouldn’t pray you…” she took Ruby’s hands in hers and squeezed them.
“I didn’t want to trouble you showing those videos. There’s more.”
“Excuse me?” the journalist withdrew.
“Don’t think bad, nothing similar to what you’ve seen, I swear you.”
“Sorry, but I got a huge headache. Maybe now I really need your bed.”

Diana stayed at the laptop for another good hour, she watched the screen: it was almost 3AM. She closed the laptop, got up from the sofa making her way to the window, but she was distracted by a motorcycle rumble. Sticking out her eyes, she saw the driver stop and take out the helmet, to then look up, just in the woman’s direction.
The trees on the sidewalk did not offer a clear view, but she could see a very young boy, middle length hair, tied up in a tail, shaved right under. Some beard, not very tidy, and a showy scar on his left eyebrow.
This last detail was not leaving space to any doubt: it was him!
Lucas Walsh!
She thought of taking her gun first, but she was not as fast as the boy, who left again. In any case, it would not have been a good idea, considering all the alcohol she has drunk.
She could not understand why he was there, and how he could have her home address, but she decided she was going to find out soon.
Meantime, the tiresome hit her as well, so she decided to look at the material on her laptop comfortably, in her room.
She entered, trying to make as less noise as possible.
She placed her open laptop on the night table, sitting on the bed and, thanks to the screen light, she could see Ruby, sleeping on her side, with her arm completely out of the sheets. The light highlighted the woman’s hand, full of small cuts.
She touched it, trying to move her fingers, noticing some dry blood, but her investigation ended quickly: Ruby woke up and turned around suddenly, grabbing Diana’s wrist, holding it without the intention to hurt her.
“What were you going to do?”
“How did you get these cuts?”
“It’s none of your business!”
“You know, I was suffering of the same disorder when I was a kid…” Ruby grabbed Diana’s wrist stronger, but she turned the situation upside down, blocking both woman’s wrists.
“You always forget I’m the cop” her voice was almost ironic, mixed with a sarcastic smile.
Their eyes were so close.
“Since when you want it, Ruby?” she became serious all of a sudden, without distracting herself from the woman’s eyes, then she let her go.
The two were not talking anymore, their eyes were communicating instead. They stared at each other for a long time, not to lose a centimeter of each other’s features.
Diana’s eyes became shiny and started sparkling of a new light, when Ruby moved her eyes on the woman’s lips, who smiled, moving some rebel hair behind her ear. Without a reason, they both felt completely relieved from the terrible day: now only them both existed. Ruby placed a hand behind Diana’s neck, with the explicit intention of receiving what seemed inevitable, when all stopped.
“I apologize.”
“It’s ok.” Ruby suddenly got up from the bed, with Diana’s astonishment.
“Where are you going?”
“Home. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have stayed here.”
“No, please, wait a second… Is it my fault, isn’t it?”
“You scare me. Always changing your mood.”
Ruby was aware that the woman couldn’t be emotionally stable. She experienced a tragedy, after all, but she didn’t feel to stay beside her. Even less, after all just happened.
“Don’t go, please. I…cannot bear the silence of this place any longer…”
“Is this the reason why you tried to kiss me? To shake your loneliness? See you around, detective.”
She managed to open the bedroom door a little, but Diana was in front of her again.
“Stay.”

3 Luke

Lucas Walsh, called Luke, was the son of the boss of Irish Mob, Aaron Walsh. Not one, but the mugwump of Irish mafia: a man who managed to climb on top with every kind of trick and without any care, not even for his family.
He thought that the activity of the organization could and should enlarge towards illicit more profitable than the simple drugs dealing and prostitution.
Lucas was the unintentional incipit to extend the organization in a direction that could lead Aaron to enrich himself beyond all expectations.
That night, he arrived at the Global Gas Station, near Hunts Point. He stopped his motorcycle near one of the petrol pumps and took his phone out of his pocket, checking the time.
“Shit, hurry up!”
The person he was waiting for was late, so he entered the shop of the gas station to take something to drink.
Just then, the phone rang.
“Come out, asshole.” The call suddenly stopped.
Going out of the shop, to the other side of the street, he could see a black Mercedes.
Lucas approached, when one of the back doors was suddenly open: a big man came out, dressed of the same car color, tugged the boy, and pushed him inside the car.
“Shit, Thompson! Teach some manners to this beast!”
The kid complained, touching his arm with a grimace of pain.
“I always told you not to call me by name, piece of shit!”
“I repeat your fucking name, instead! Thompson! Thompson! Thomp…” the guy who have previously bumped him, slapped his face, while the other man laughed, to get angry a second later.
“Thank your father and that my name is not Thompson, otherwise you would have been dead already!”
“And you can thank to be with this kind of Hulk!”
“Try to have some respect, dickhead! Now, tell me…did you place the device where I ordered you?”
Lucas watched the man with a questioning face, then he replied.
“But you didn’t say…”
“Where the fuck did you place it?!?”
“Well, I…in the car…among the compressors of the air conditioning…”
“You’re a real asshole! Why did I fucking give you her address, what do you think?”
“But I could not get in, and…”
“You didn’t have to get in! Hiding it in the area would have been enough. Pray that all runs smoothly, or I will make you come to a bad end!”
Lucas was grinding his teeth, and his closed fists seemed willing to find the face of his interlocutor. But he could not make it. The bodyguard would have immediately broken him in pieces.
“Now get out and keep me informed.” The man with the fake name threw the kid out of the car, making him fall to the ground in a bad way, then made a sign to the driver for leaving.
Lucas stayed on the ground for a moment, crying and punching the concrete. It was impressive and at the same time pitiful, that such a wild kid could hide an open childish side.
“Fuck, fuck! I should never have…never…!”
The fall made his phone go out of his jeans’ pocket, he noticed that after a little bit and checked that it was still working, then he waited for a moment, and clicking on the menu he entered the photo gallery, scrolling to some images that portrayed him, while he was in tender attitudes with a girl. That girl was Noa, Diana’s daughter.
“It’s too late…if only I could go back…”
He watched them for a while, then selected them all and, with his trembling thumb, he pressed the button “delete”. That action was putting an end to his moment of weakness, a moment he had to push away, because the night was not over, and he still had to finish “working”. Also, he didn’t want to remember. Not in that moment. He got up swaying, then he opened the bag on the back of his motorcycle, taking out some small bags of cocaine, some other with marijuana. From one of these last he took the right quantity for rolling a joint: he needed to smoke.
After a couple of mouthfuls, he took again the phone, searching for his father’s number, but it was ringing without reply.
He tried again and this time his dad picked up.
“What now, Luke?” he hated being called in that way. His name was Lucas. Lucas was the name his mother chose. It was all that was left of her.
“I just met Thompson…”
“I know. He told me. He also told me that you haven’t been so good. Anyway, Luke…don’t think you can come home until you don’t put an end to this story.”
“Fuck, dad…”
“I don’t want anyone, and again, anyone of those who have seen everything, sending my work to hell. Do what you must and make a good work. Tomorrow is the last useful day. I won’t repeat it again.”
Lucas wanted to counter, but the phone call was interrupted before he could do it, so, as if he was crazy, he put together a conversation with his father in the middle of the street, keeping the phone on his ear and screaming.
“I don’t do anything else than living with the constant fear of failure! And I fail, dad! I always fail! You taught me nothing! Only to obtain things you want doing bad actions! Even at the cost of taking lives! That the existence doesn’t count! The only things that matter are the respect towards who’s above you and the money! Fuck! Fuck! Even mom…mom was different…I wanted to be like her…and instead…”
The phone ringtone brought Lucas back to reality: it was Thompson.
He thought they had nothing to talk about any longer.
“You must fix Liam. Tonight.”
“But dad said…”
“He said. But there’s no time. Tell me if you need someone for this.”
“No, I can handle it on my own. As always.”
“Good.”
Lucas jumped on his Harley. He gave so much gas that seemed like a thunder. His tormented thoughts were running faster than his motorcycle.
4 Lucas

It was already 5AM when Lucas arrived in the area where Liam lived.
The kid was living with his maternal grandparents in Williamsburg, in a popular building near the rich buildings on the river. Even though their lives and their money were different, Lucas considered Liam his best friend. No, his only friend. He had no other.
Their friendship was born when Lucas, for the third time, was repeating the third year of High School, ending up in Liam’s classroom. The passion for motorcycles and races, immediately united them, with the difference that Liam didn’t own a motorcycle, since he was only 16 y/o and his grandparents could only afford the necessary for him. Going on with their friendship, Lucas found out that Liam’s parents were dead: his father had murdered his mother for jealousy and subsequently committed suicide, when Liam was very small. The hatred Liam was feeling for his dad was the same Lucas felt for Aaron: with the difference that Lucas’ dad was still alive. Moreover, Lucas didn’t like school, and even if everybody knew he was coming from a millionaire family, this was not making his school life easy: often he was caught up dealing in the corridors, even in front of teachers. They said he was a difficult kid, because he has lost his mother some years before, in unknown circumstances. Even this was bringing he and Liam together. Somebody was suspecting he had even killed his mother, since he was a stupid. All of this was making the boy suffer, and he rarely went to school, but he couldn’t make any friend the few times he tried to go. Liam was the exception. The only one that, instead of judging him when he was skipping the most difficult classes, skipped them with him as well. When Lucas one day arrived at school with a new motorcycle, all people thought it was a whim fulfilled by his millionaire dad, but it was a gift for his best friend, instead. So, besides the voices depicting him as a matricide, the voices he was a homosexual followed, because “a friend could never make you a gift like that”; nobody knew that Lucas found a brother in Liam. Younger, and a little fragile. Both, for different reasons, could not count on a parental figure, and this was making him feel so bounded to Liam in such an unhealthy way. He wanted to bring him everywhere, even the damn day that changed not only their destinies, but Noa’s as well.
Being there in that moment was making him sick, but he could not avoid it.
He parked the motorcycle in the last slice of darkness left of the night, then he started walking back and forth like a wild beast prisoner in a zoo, trying to think of a way to escape, even if there was none.
He was sweating, despite the autumnal temperature was all but warm.
He looked around, as if someone could discover what was in his mind, and in the end he decided.
He made Liam’s phone ring: two rings, a pause, and again two rings. It was their secret code to communicate an urgency.
Liam replied in the same way, and after some minutes reached his friend on the street.
“What are you doing here? How did it go with “her””?
“Forget about it. Listen, you have to leave.”
“What? Where should I go?”
“I don’t know. Don’t you have relatives, somewhere?”
“You said everything was going to be ok, Lucas! You promised me!”
“I know, but you’re the only one left…”
“Shit! Shit!”
“I…cannot make any exception…the only way to avoid killing you is to tell my father that I didn’t find you, but you have to leave…”
“I have no money! And I can’t ask my family! They would question me…”
“Sell the moto.”
“What?”
“Sell it. Better, I will sell it to a guy I know. Then I will give you some money, but that piece of shit of my father won’t give me a cent until he doesn’t know I completed my work with you. He won’t drop anything in any case when he will know that I didn’t kill you.”
“I’m scared, Lucas…”
“I know.”
Liam jumped in Lucas’ arms, who was surprised by so much tenderness, returning the hug as well.

Our life

Her ability to amaze me was incredible. I knew that coming back home every night, she wasn’t going to be there.
Obviously, I am sarcastic.
She was almost never there.
So, I came in. I checked that she wasn’t home, and I went out again. So, I was not going to think about anything.
But walking along Manhattan’s desolated alleys was making me even more thoughtful.
I risked being robbed several times. For a woman walking alone, robbery is the least, after all.
Rarely, like tonight, I found her waiting for me: naked in bed, under fresh sheets and with my pillow in her arms.
“Where have you been?” I hate that ironic and challenging tone, almost annoying, while she’s adding a sly and irresistible smile.
“And you?” I don’t get an answer.
It’s one of those moments she’s not even letting me undress by myself, I find her in front of me, with the white sheet wrapped around her body, on the line of her breasts, contrasting with her black hair, to watch her dropping it on the floor a second later.
“So? Should I undress you, Ruby?”
Her arms around my neck and her dark eyes looking at my lips, are softening my defenses. However, she doesn’t deserve my attentions.
“You can’t do that all the time…what perfume is this? It’s not yours.” I know her smell, and what she’s used to wear to be even more desirable.
“Would you stop questioning me? Enjoy the moment…” She’s trying to kiss me, I can feel her soft hair on my chest. I’m almost falling for it when I decide to test her.
“You smell like a man, Diana. You stink like one of those pigs you work for, just to say.” It isn’t true: I’m lying, but she doesn’t know it.
Her arms are now leaving me. So, the warmth of her breathe. Then, a quick pain on my cheek.
I try not to lose my control, when I strongly grab her wrist, her hand that just slapped me.
“Let me go, Ruby! I shouldn’t have come home tonight. I didn’t come here to get humiliated by you again!”
“Humiliating you? Me? You’re kidding me, right?”
“If you don’t like what I am, we can end it here!”
“I don’t like what you have become, it’s different!”
“I was always like this.”
“Don’t say bullshits, you know you’re saying a pile of bullshits!”
“I always had a tendency for addictions…if it wasn’t like this, I could not have stayed with you.”
“Easy to turn it against me!”
“Why? Do you want to convince me that it’s not like that?”
She thinks she’s addicted to me…she thinks that! Her! Do you understand?
I cherish such a beautiful memory of our first date, that my breath breaks when I think about it, but at the same time I feel anger and nausea, as if my love for her has drained all I had from me, when I realized I loved her.
She doesn’t speak anymore.
She wears my shirt, that I left on a chair last night, and buttons it only in the middle. But it is when I see her lifting her long hair, that I understand what she is about to do.
“Diana…please…”
“Why not? I have nothing to do here anymore.”
She walks to the bed, sitting on it, and opens the drawer of the night table.
She is taking it…she is taking that shit out…!
If I only try to get close to her and drop that shit to the floor, I already know that it would all end in crap. We arrived at the point of violence.
So, I watch her…watch that thing that rises from her nose to her brain, and that is taking her away from me…

Two years before oblivion

“What do we have here?”
“Firearm murder, detective” from his tone, the cop didn’t seem so sure.
“Get off and let me see!”
The boy on the ground had a bullet hole in his chest, but some white lather mixed with blood on his mouth’s sides.
“Firearm, huhn?”
“Detective, I…”
The discussion was interrupted by a car, stopping there.
“Who informed the press?”
“I don’t…”
“Sure, you don’t know anything.”
A woman got off the car, she was very attractive, tall, with long hair. On her forties, but she looked younger.
Dressed in leather, with an open coat and a white shirt that didn’t leave space to imagination.
Behind her, there were a couple of photographers.
“Ruby Evans, my pleasure” the woman shook her hand to the detective, who however did not reply with the same courtesy.
“Diana Bitton. And I can assure you that it’s not a pleasure. Here we have a dead boy, he was just 15.”
“Could you tell me something more about this boy?”
“What can I say? Without ID, as the three others before him.”
Diana closed the zip of the cloth containing the dead body, then she waved to one of the cops, as a sign that he could take it away.
“Poor kid…can you imagine the cause of death?”
“Do you think I am a pathologist or a coroner? What seems clear, for now, is that the firearm hole is only an expedient.”
“What exactly do you mean?”
Diana got irritated by the question, getting in front of the journalist, at a few centimeters from her face.
“Listen to me carefully, Miss Evans, this is your chance to get a scoop and climb a step towards a glorious career, but for me this is very different! Now, please get off!” She tried to get away hitting the other with her shoulder, but Ruby grabbed her arm.
For a second, Diana was breathless: it was a firm but soft touch, at the same time.
“I warn you, take your hands off me! Do you know that I could place a bullet in one of your vital spots?”
Ruby let go, she was amused and fascinated at the same time, then she took a business card from her bag.
“Call me when you’re more reasonable. I know you will.”
Diana was very surprised by Ruby’s calm reaction, despite her rough tones, so she got the card with arrogance, almost ripping it off the journalist’s hand, and she walked away quickly.

The next morning, Ruby entered her office very early. She was the first, so she could dedicate part of her time to something she couldn’t take out of her head: Diana’s reaction, totally weird and out of place. It takes very little for a journalist to light the fire of curiosity, but Ruby could feel that behind it there was more, much more than the annoyance of a cop towards her category. The intention was to search information about Diana: a detective should be used to this kind of things, no? Why didn’t it seem like that? She started to search in the archive, all the articles she could find about the murders of last years, but everything was normal, apart from one thing: the homicides linked to kids have all been assigned to Diana. Not satisfied, she decided to search only her last name: “Bitton”.
What she found froze her blood, but she could not think clearly, because her phone started ringing: it was a number not saved in the phone list.
“Hello?”
“Miss Evans? This is Diana…Diana Bitton.”
Ruby didn’t think Diana could call her, she believed it was a vain attempt, but she also was feeling very far from the reason why she left her number to the detective.
“Good morning, Miss Bitton, how can I…”
“Can we see each other?” she cut short.
“Well, I…”
“I’ll wait for you outside of the office at 8PM” the call ended.

Awakening in abandonment

“What is this mess…? Damn…” I thought I set the alarm clock at 8AM, but it was ringing earlier. The technology and I don’t understand each other, sometimes.
I take the phone and I set again the alarm, putting it in silence mode, then I throw it on the night table.
I’m feeling totally stoned. I fell asleep crying, with Diana next to me, completely high…but…
“Diana…? Fuck! Fuck!”
She left. She waited that I was asleep to go out.
“Damn stupid!”
I am tired feeling helpless, and I am tired of letting her do what she wants. I am tired to reject her because I’m disgusted by what she does and with who. I want to go out and search for her, but I’m also phisically tired.
I am always late at work, if I wasn’t delivering my articles barely in time, I would have been fired a long time ago. I’m eating mostly crackers and yogurt, the only edible food that I’m able to find in the vending machine under my building. I have no time and will to cook my food. I don’t even remember the last time I cooked something, not even when Diana did. In the kitchen there is nothing out of place, and the dishes are full of dust.
This apartment is very different compared to the day we rent it. It was clean and fresh. Not only because we were used to clean it perfectly. It was a mirror of what we were and of what we have lost with time.
It was full of light, and each corner spoke of us and our love. Now the shutters are always lowered, a hostile twilight comes in, nothing romantic; the air is heavy, only changed when we lay the clothes to dry. Sun is not coming in from the windows, and in our lives.
Making this trip back in time, to what we were, doesn’t help in getting up and going searching for her. There are still some hours, after all, so I decide to close my eyes and rest as much as could allow me to go to work lucid enough. But sleep is gone, I’m only feeling that tiredness that doesn’t allow me to sleep.
I notice my phone flashing with the corner of my eye, and it seems her name is blinking on the display.
First, she goes away and then calls? Die!
Fuck! Even if the phone is not ringing, that continuous flash is bothering me, so I decide to pick up.
“What do you want?”
“Love, I had an accident.”
Since when she restarted calling me “love”, exactly? I didn’t think drugs made people sour or sweet in the blink of an eye.
An accident…should I really believe it?
“Please…I don’t even know where I am…”
“Send me your position…fuck, Diana!”
And now she starts crying like a fountain and I am not able to understand anything of what she says, between sobs and her voice mixed with alcohol.
I perfectly know by now each phase of this delirium.
“Diana, do you remember how to send me your position through the gps? Do you remember when we met the first time, and we couldn’t find each other?”
“Y-y-y-es, I remember…”
“Ok, good girl. Now put the speakerphone, so you can free your hands.”
Luckily, she calms down and sends me her damn position.
Let’s see…Central Park!
Ok, thought worse than that!
“Did you get it?”
“Yes. Don’t move, I’m coming.”
4
Secrets

Ruby went out of the office at 7.30PM, it was raining and she didn’t absolutely want to be late.
Diana had been hermetic and hurried on the phone, so she thought that such kind of woman was optimizing time, it was definitely the case of going out earlier.
She placed the handle of the umbrella under her arm, in a way that she could take out a hand mirror and check that make up and hair were ok, then she sprayed some perfume on the neck’s sides and on her wrists, finally she took her phone to spend the time before the meeting.
She thought of waiting near the building, so she could be easily found, but something didn’t go in the way planned, since at 8PM Diana had not arrived yet, and her phone started ringing.
“May I know where you are located?” she asked, annoyed.
“Exactly out of the building, in front of the entrance.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course, may I know in which place you are? Please send me your position.”
“Ok…”
Ruby burst out laughing.
“Detective Bitton, I work for the New York Times, you have taken a completely wrong road!”
“Shit..! I’m really sorry!”
“Don’t worry, I will wait here, unfortunately my car is broken, otherwise I’d have reached you.”
“But with this weather, you could…” Ruby anticipated her and cut short.
“I don’t really like waiting alone in pubs and shops, I prefer staying here. I’ll be waiting.”

Diana arrived with her Ford near the Times building, then she parked.
The thick rain and the wipers didn’t allow a clear view, and while she was trying to spot Ruby, she heard someone knocking at the passenger’s window: it was her.
Diana waved at Ruby to get in the car, and she quickly closed her umbrella and got in. Despite the long waiting and the crappy weather, the journalist smiled at her.
“In the end, we made it!”
“Yes, I’m so sorry…my head is somewhere else, it was not my intention to have you waiting so long…”
“No problem, now I’m here, all for you! What did you want to talk about?”
“Well, I…”
Diana looked embarrassed for Ruby’s sentence, and the fresh perfume and the woman’s blue eyes distracted her for some moments, then she regained her focus and looked at her with a gently questioning glance.
“Do you want…” she immediately corrected herself “…Would you like to eat something?”

The fast-food Diana took Ruby was very far from the Times offices. It was a place full of teenagers, who were paying, waiting their turn, and then eating with hunger.
Ruby couldn’t help but notice that Diana was looking at them interested.
“Why are we here, exactly? Maybe this is the moment to speak about it.”
“I’m investigating in this area. The kid we have found dead the other day had a receipt coming from this place in his pocket, and some dollars.”
“Has the autopsy been done?”
“Yes, but there was no trace of food in his stomach, and he was found one hour after going out of here.”
“So, he has taken food away.”
“Exactly.”
“Probably it was not even for him…”
“Most probably. Even because there was nothing in the surroundings. I think he was taken to the place he has been found and he didn’t go there on his feet.”
Diana seemed really worried, beyond the simple investigation work, and Ruby could feel it.
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Ok…” the woman was nipping a hamburger.
“What is troubling you, for real? Don’t tell me it’s because there are kids involved. You always witness such cases, even worse than that, crueler. You’re used to…I believe, please correct me if I’m wrong, that you might be personally involved in this case…”
The last sentence made Diana losing her control, she could not swallow, since the bite got stuck in her windpipe, preventing her to breathe: Ruby, realizing the severity of the whole situation, jumped towards the woman and started making the Heimlich maneuver, until she made her spitting the piece of food.
“Diana, are you ok?”
“Yes…now yes…I’m…I’m okay…”
As if it was the most natural thing in the world, the woman tightened Ruby.
“Take me away from here…”

After setting the navigator, she placed herself in the driver’s seat in Diana’s car, who was asleep for most part of the ride, with her head against the window. Now she looked extremely fragile, and she was sure the woman was weak for real: she couldn’t see her as the know-it-all and grouchy cop of their first meeting.
She wanted to talk to her, understand what happened, some terrible thing that was making her feel so bad, deepen what she knew about her, something she still was not aware of.
Her research had given only one vague result, that was not satisfying her enough. She knew that the core of what she was searching for had been expertly and deliberately hidden by the police.
Those thoughts were soon replaced by a feeling of tenderness, when she briefly glanced Diana’s face, who was now deeply asleep. She wasn’t feeling as Ruby Evans anymore, the journalist always chasing the truth, but only as a woman absorbed by another human’s anxiety.

The navigator warned that they have arrived at destination, Diana’s house, and Ruby tried to park the car gently.
“Diana? Diana, please, wake up…” she shook her shoulder lightly.
The woman saw Ruby sitting in the driver’s place and she could not understand for a second, then rationalized the situation.
“Fuck…”
“Ok, I think I have only to call a taxi now…let’s talk tomorrow!” she smiled.
“No…no. It’ so late. We are very far from your office, they will drain your money for nothing. Tomorrow, I’ll take you to work.”
“It’s not the case of bothering you.”
“No problem, come in.”

Diana’s apartment was humble but cozy. What was standing out, above all, were the several bookshelves in different places and the dim lights coming from some wall lamps, that seemed hiding the surroundings.
Ruby noticed that some frames were placed upside down and the living room was messy but in a “tidy” way: on the couch there were some clothes badly folded, but surely clean, on the small table beside there was a glass half-full of wine and a notebook with many printed sheets on top.
“I’m very sorry for the mess, really. I didn’t think I had guests.” She smiled with bitterness.
Diana was cleaning the couch, and Ruby went closer to help her, noticing that some clothes surely could not belong to the woman.
“I’m taking these.” Diana rushed, almost running towards one of the bedrooms with the door almost closed, to suddenly freeze and make her way towards her bedroom. Ruby noticed that immediately, but preferred not testing the ground, for the moment.
“Well…it seems clear to me that I’m not welcome here, despite your invitation.”
Diana turned to Ruby with the clothes still in her hands.
“You could even stop with all these compliments and be less formal.”
“Then tell me what happened to you!”
“Why, don’t you know? You surely did your research, am I wrong?”
“Are you kidding me? What do you think I could find?”
“Even too much!” Diana lightly pushed Ruby, turning on her back, but couldn’t go too far because the woman knocked against the bedroom door, opening it.
What appeared in front of her was clearly a teenager room.
“Who’s living with you? Or better, lived?”
Diana dropped the clothes on the floor, unwilling, then she put her hands on her face: she was crying silently. She didn’t want to look weak to who, in the end, was only a stranger.
“My Noa…”
“So, she was the first victim found near Central Park…she was your daughter…”

XENA: THÀNATOS: The Ritual CHAPTER 1

The fresh night and the starry sky could not induce Gabrielle to sleep, and while she was turning towards the woman she loved, she tried to introduce a little conversation. When Xena was so silent, she felt as if she was traveling back in time, when words seemed to be an annoying exception for the warrior and her quiet nature.

“Xena, are you asleep?”

“No, Gab”.

“Neither do I…”

“I’m afraid of what awaits us, I would have wanted a little bit of peace…”

“The great Warrior Princess afraid and speaking of peace?”

“I feel so tired, Gabrielle…”

The fire next to the pallet was about to expire, but Gabrielle could still see Xena’s face, that was alarming indeed.

She sweetly caressed her face, then she moved to her shoulders, but Xena seemed bothered.

She liquidated the girl turning on the other side.

“Good night, Gab…”

“Night, Xena…”

**********

The two women, on their steeds, were very quiet; Gabrielle wanted to speak to Xena, but something was broken between them after the return from Mogador (Who’s Gurkhan?).

She was still shocked by the whole thing happened with Gurkhan, while Xena was bringing on herself the physical and inner signs of the endured tortures.

Despite all of this, the warrior was searching the girl’s glance with the corner of her eye, and she was often turning towards her.

“How are you feeling about seeing the Amazons again?” Xena was a little ironic.

“I feel so far from that world…if I ever belonged there”.

“Don’t you feel like an Amazon warrior?”

“I don’t feel like an Amazon…and maybe not even as a warrior, after all”.

Xena understood it was not the case to go on.

“However, we’re almost there”.

Gabrielle did not answer, if not with a weak sigh, inaudible for Xena.

**********

They arrived near the Amazon village, that however seemed different since the last time the two warriors were there: a thick fog that was not making even grass visible, its acrid smell, like the smell of death.

Xena got off her horse, so as Gabrielle.

They were looking around, but it was as if nothing was around them; Xena made sign to the girl to remain silent, trying to hear the smallest noise that could lead her back to a human life.

Gabrielle, trying to not make any sound, stumbled on a root, but Xena promptly stopped her fall bending over and getting down towards the girl, grabbing her.

It was in that exact moment when she heard a weak woman voice, singing a dirge.

Next to the root where Gabrielle was falling, there was a giant old tree, and behind it there was a human figure, kneeling, dressed in black and having a coat covering shoulders and head.

They could not realize who this mystical figure could be, until she didn’t turn towards them, uncovering a well-known face: a woman with long blonde hair with a scar on her face: Najara. She was praying.

Xena couldn’t believe her eyes and immediately burst out.

“You…you cannot be…”

“…Alive? The Djinn never abandoned me…”

Xena unsheathed her sword, but Gabrielle promptly interposed with her Sais between her and Najara.

“…Gabrielle…again? Are you still trying to protect her? After all we’ve been through because of her?”

“Xena…no…”

“Gabrielle, get out of the way or this time…”

The sentence was interrupted by an arm that was strongly pushed against Xena’s throat, from behind.

“I cannot let you do that, Xena!”.

**********

Xena lowered her sword, then she turned towards the warrior who had just threatened her.

“Varia…you ask for help and then…”

“I will need your help for other things…and now…if you would let the priestess pray…”

“Excuse me…? Priestess…?” Gabrielle was shocked by what she had just heard, while Xena was glancing at her, pitying her with disgust.

“Come with me”. Varia was leading the way, while Xena hit Gabrielle with her shoulder.

**********

“So, what happened to the Amazon village?” Xena was still looking around her, not believing what she was seeing, walking slowly and carefully.

“About a luster ago, some of my sisters disappeared, only to be found quartered and hanging by their feet in the forest”.

Varia was narrating all of that with the typical coldness of who wanted to keep her self-control.

“Couldn’t be again some other mad one who’s hating the Amazons…?” Gabrielle was immediately interrupted by Varia, who went on with the explanations.

“No, we have reasons to think that is someone within our community, even if the murders decreased a lot since the priestess arrived”.

“The priestess…” Xena smiled sarcastically.

“She was of great help” the Queen continued “she gave us strength, precious advices and…”

“Enough, please stop it! I know that woman, and she’s not what she wants you to believe!”

“Why all this hate? She also knows you, and she used very beautiful words for you and Gabrielle”.

“Especially for Gabrielle, I can imagine…” Xena’s sarcasm was even more evident, so Gabrielle decided to intervene in the conversation.

“Why all this fog?”

“I have no idea, Gab. This village has become a tomb…we cannot see the sun since a long time ago…”

The three women were in the center of the village, when Xena suddenly stopped: something was on her way.

“Damn, what…?”

The fog was so thick that was not leaving the chance to have a clear vision, not even at a few centimeters from the ground. She kneeled to check in what she had just bumped, and she realized that what she was touching was particularly cold, hard, and wet…

“For all Gods Xena, this is…” Gabrielle’s voice was trembling.

“…what is left of a skull” Xena ended the sentence, while Varia was looking around, unsheathing her sword.

“That was not happening for long time, I can’t understand…”

“There is very little to understand Varia, let’s get out of here!”

Xena took the remains of the corpse, putting them in a cloth, under Gabrielle’s disgusted eyes.

**********

The two warriors were in the shed of the Amazon’s guests, Xena was taking off her armor and clothes to lay in a warm, relaxing bath.

Gabrielle went closer, embracing her from behind.

“Xena…” whispered.

The woman didn’t say a word, and with her hand she moved Gabrielle’s hands away from her hips, then she continued to undress herself.

“Have you decided to not speak to me?”

“I have nothing to say to you, Gab”.

“Yes, I can imagine. And I can also guess that Najara has nothing to do with your punitive silence”.

“Gabrielle, I am tired. Tired to warn you about obvious things. How can I let myself go with you, with what serenity?”

“I was not defending Najara…”

Xena entered in the bathtub, filled with warm water and perfumes.

“That crazy exalted woman only brings troubles…and I thought we got rid of her forever…”

“It seems Najara is treated as a Goddess, here”.

Gabrielle undressed herself as well, and she persuasively entered in the bathtub in front of Xena, that could not help but watching her with desire.

Xena lowered her eyes, massaging the soap on her arms.

“The power Najara exercises on the Amazons is relative, when we found out what she is aiming to, she is not going to be a problem anymore…”

Gabrielle bit her lips.

“Are you still jealous?”

“I was never jealous…” Xena’s dry reply was weeping lies.

“I am jealous instead…” Gabrielle took Xena’s left hand and gently brushed the sponge cloth among her fingers.

“…You know, I didn’t like the way that Amazon who brought us here was looking at you…”

Gabrielle leaned closer, right in front of Xena, bringing her arms around her neck, while the warrior, inebriated by the woman’s sensuality, was caressing her back.

“I missed you so much, Xena…”

Gabrielle set her glance on Xena’s lips, to feel them on hers, soft and finally daring.

The kiss became deeper, until a dull thud first and a desperate scream then, interrupted it.

“For all Gods, Xena! What could have been?”

“Let’s go to have a look!”

The two women immediately came out of the bathtub, dressing with sheets in all hurry, to open the shed door wide.

Xena was ahead of Gabrielle as a sign of protection, then the two women slowly tried to understand what has just happened, but the view was even less clear, they could barely see the Amazon village constructions, from which they were both walking away.

A little bit later, Xena’s feet could feel something warm among their toes, touching their bare skin: it was blood.

Xena didn’t say anything to Gabrielle, following the blood trail, that was becoming clearer and thicker.

Gabrielle was looking at her woman’s shoulders, knowing that asking questions in that moment was not appropriate, until Xena turned towards her, making sign to stay silent: she had seen something.

**********

In front of them, laying on the ground, there was the same young Amazon who brought them to their shed.

Her eyes were looking up and she was completely stiff: her fingers were folded, as if she tried to grab something.

“…is…is she dead, Xena?”

“No, she is still breathing…we must bring her back to the village and…”

Xena heard some noises, as if someone was hiding behind the forest trees and stepped on the deadwoods.

She took the sheet that was wrapped around her body and rolling it up skillfully it became a sort of whip, that was promptly wrapped around what seemed to be a shadow; she captured it by pulling it towards her.

“It was you, damned!”

“No, Xena, I am a victim as much as her, I swear…!”

“Victim? Don’t make me laugh!”

Gabrielle didn’t feel like intervening, this time.

“Xena, we must go away from her and try to save…”

Gabrielle could not finish speaking, as Varia and some Amazons arrived at the place, running.

“What’s happening here? We heard screams…I can’t believe it…another dead body…”

Gab quickly replied:

“No Varia, she’s still alive, we can save her!”

“Antiope and Mira, take Selene away! The priestess could surely help us…”

Xena, hearing again the name Varia was giving to Najara, could not help but challenge.

“What are you saying? She’s not a priestess! And I’m sure all of this is her fault!”

Varia went closer to Xena, watching her from head to toes, smiling mischievously: she was completely naked in front of her.

“I’ve already told you that the priestess is very important for us, you will realize that by yourself.”

She took the sheet imprisoning Najara and placed it on her chest, brushing her.

“Now, cover yourself. As beautiful as what I see, it’s freezing in here…”

Gabrielle watched Varia first and then Xena, with total surprise and disappointment.

“Have I heard well?”

“Yeah”.

“Is this all you can say?”

Xena was quickly covering herself, ignoring what just happened.

“So…?”

“Gab, this is not the right moment for asking stupid things…let’s go!”

Gabrielle was opening her mouth, as if she wanted to add something else, but in the end she sighed, bothered, and followed Xena.

**********

Xena and Gabrielle were dressing, soon they would have been in front of Varia and the old Amazons to talk about the last things happened.

“Ready?” Xena was opening the door as to hurry Gabrielle, but she seemed taking her time.

“No, please go alone”.

“Excuse me? What do you want to do? Sleep? You’re kidding me, I hope!”

Xena put her hands on her hips, then she went closer to the girl, sitting beside her.

“What’s in your head?”

“You seemed pleased by what Varia told you, and I know things between us are not the same as before” when Gabrielle spoke the last sentence, her voice was chocking.

“Do you realize this is not the right moment or the right place to talk about it, do you?”

“It never is, Xena! We are always in the middle of something else, always with other things to worry about, than us both!”

Gab’s words were full of frustration.

“Do what you want, Gabrielle. See you later”.

Xena walked away, slamming the door behind her, while Gabrielle placed her hands on her temples.

The only time the two women became deeply far from each other was for Solan’s death, but no woman has stepped between them.

**********

Xena arrived in the center of the village, precisely where the Amazons were used to make dances and initiations; Varia and her loyal warriors were waiting for her.

In front of the entire group of women, there was a stone altar on which was laying the young Selene, with her body positioned as a cross with her head turned to the East, circled of small fires, while beside the girl there was Najara, this time dressed completely in white.

The priestess leaned on the Amazon with a plate full of wine on fire, adding resin and perfumed oil, and she placed it in one of the girl’s hands, then she enacted a prayer, collapsing on the ground:

“Hear me, O Death [Thanatos], whose empire unconfin’d,

extends to mortal tribes of ev’ry kind.

On thee, the portion of our time depends,

whose absence lengthens life, whose presence ends.

Thy sleep perpetual bursts the vivid folds,

by which the soul, attracting body holds:

Common to all of ev’ry sex and age,

for nought escapes thy all-destructive rage;

Not youth itself thy clemency can gain,

vig’rous and strong, by thee untimely slain.

In thee, the end of nature’s works is known,

in thee, all judgment is absolv’d alone:

No suppliant arts thy dreadful rage controul,

no vows revoke the purpose of thy soul;

O blessed pow’r regard my ardent pray’r,

and human life to age abundant spare.”

There was absolute silence.

Xena looked at Varia doubtfully and suspicious as always, but she didn’t say a word.

Moments later, Selene started screaming desperately, and in the same moment Varia held Xena back, who clearly wanted to run towards the Amazon, who got up on the altar on her feet with her eyes wide open, to fall back immediately.

After this terrible vision, Xena broke free from Varia, walking to Selene: she was dead.

“Najara! You could be damned! You killed her! YOU killed her!”

Varia, understanding that Xena was totally out of control, with a sign ordered her warriors to stop her.

Najara, still collapsed on the ground, tried to get up without much success, and she spoke to Xena with a weak voice.

“Selene was possessed, our village would have been in danger, but I haven’t killed her…”

“Nothing’s yours here, Najara! How can you say it was not your fault? We all saw you!” Xena was furious.

“Take Xena away!” Varia ordered to the Amazon warriors.

“You have no idea of the mistake you are making, Varia…!”

The warriors took Xena to the private shed of the Amazon Queen.

XENA – THE GIFT: Deception and Prodigy CHAP. 4

That night another storm was raging on Thebes, which made Gabrielle waking up suddenly. Scared, she jumped, lifting her back from the bed.

Not only the thunders had made her restless, but also what she was dreaming.

That woke also Xena up, who immediately worried for the girl.

“All ok, Gab?”

“Yes…I think so…”

Xena gently wrapped Gabrielle in the sheet, who reclined on the warrior’s breast.

“I’m scared…”

“Of what, Gabrielle?”

“That you could die…”

“Killing me is not so simple…” Xena reassured her, kissing her forehead and tightening her closer, and Gabrielle immediately replied to the warmth of that hug, as if she wanted to cling on it.

Xena could feel it.

“Why don’t we go away from here, Xena? And go back to Amphipolis…?”

“To stay home and spin the wool? It’s not the life I want…we want…otherwise you would have never followed me…”

“So you’re not repented to have kept me with you?”

“No, Gabrielle…”

“So why did you say that…?”

“I was furious for having lost my chakram…but I have never thought for real that it was your fault…I don’t think I could ever deprive myself of you…”

The two women looked at each other for a long time, then Xena caressed the girl’s face and started kissing her, but the kiss was immediately interrupted by a windblast, which made the window slamming.

Gabrielle got up to close it, but something outside woke her curiosity up, and waving her hand she called Xena.

Under the pouring rain, outside King Laius court walls, Neris and Iris were evidently confabulating.

The view was not so clear because of the plenty water and the strong wind, but from that little they could understand, Iris placed an object on Neris’ paw, finally the Sphinx caressed Iris’ head with her other paw, to then take off hardly, until she disappeared.

“It seems that the Sphinx and Iris are in confidence, Xena…”

“Yeah… most probably Iris didn’t tell us everything…”

 **********

FLASHBACK: THE PREVIOUS NIGHT, AT KING LAIUS THERMAL BATHS

“You were Laius’ wife? Try to explain!”

“Xena please, let me go…it is not my intention to escape…yes I was the King’s wife, until he disclosed my secret…”

Xena let go.

“One year ago I gave birth to two twins…”

“So?”

“They were not the King’s sons, but Crisippo’s. When Laius found out, he gave the order to kill my children and I became his slave…the earrings I’m wearing are my mother’s. I don’t own anything valuable or noble anymore…”

Plentiful tears started falling on the face of what has remained of Thebes Queen. The woman, looking better, seemed older than her age and Xena could not avoid feeling empathy for her.

She placed her hand on the shoulder as a sign of support and her tone became sweeter, even though she was not hiding a suspicious look.

“Why spying on us?”

“I wanted to understand for what reason Laius convoked you…now…excuse me…would you cover yourself…?”

Iris lowered her glance and gave Xena a linen cloth. She was considerably embarrassed.

Xena wrapped the cloth around her, while Gabrielle could hardly give her attention to Iris, because she was fascinated by the warrior’s movements, who noticed that and smiled.

“Ehm…but what has the Sphinx to do in all of this?” Gabrielle asked with extreme curiosity.

“Neris is Thebes’ protector. Bringer of prosperity and justice. After the cruel death of Crisippo, she casted a curse on all of us with her impossible riddles…nobody could solve them until now…”

“The famous bloodline…”

Xena started giving herself answers.

END OF THE FLASHBACK

**********

Xena and Gabrielle looked at each other as if they were contemplating the same exact thought: Neris and Iris were clearly in confidence and were hiding something.

“What are we doing, Xena?”

“Tomorrow morning we are going to search for Neris and we will give her the solution to her riddle.

“Do you know it?”

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

“Could you please share with me your knowledge?” Gab was clearly annoyed.

“Not now. Let’s go back to sleep. An intense day is waiting for us”

“You never stop giving orders, right Xena…? Maybe even I know…”

“Gab…please…” Xena interrupted her.

Gabrielle lifted the sheet to place herself under it, uncovering Xena, who looked at her pitiful.

“Good night, Xena!” and she turned her back.

“When this will be over, I think I will go back to Potidaea for real!”

“Gabrielle…” Xena touched her shoulder, trying to turn her around, but the girl stayed firmly on her position, physically and morally.

She knew that if she were going to turn around, Xena’s glance would have melted her, giving her the victory.  Xena was her strength, but even her worst weakness.

**********

In the early morning, Xena went to the stable were Argo was, feeding her with a juicy apple.

“Directly from the King’s court…you’re a lucky girl!” she smiled, caressing the horse’s muzzle with affection.

That moment of indulgence, however, was really short, because Ares appeared behind her.

“You’re in a good mood Xena, it seems you spent a good night…”

“What are you doing, now you spy on me?”

The God of War placed his hands on her hips and, moving his head towards her neck, he sensually smelled her skin.

“It is not necessary. The blondie’s scent on you is sickly…”

Xena moved away, nervous because of Ares’ manners and words.

“What do you want, still?”

“It seems you did not listen to my warning…I have tried to tell you politely…”

“You know I prefer the unkind way, Ares…” Xena’s challenging tone was switched on.

“Ok Xena, as you want…I also prefer violence…but…” Ares went closer to her, sensually caressing her chin.

“…I’d rather use it in a more pleasant way…

“When I will find out what binds you to Thebes, you are going to pleasantly taste my sword stuck in your breast…”

Ares smiled ironically, and disappeared.

**********

Gabrielle had watched the scene secretly.

When Ares disappeared, she decided to intervene, with Xena’s surprise when she saw her.

“You and Ares…incredible!”

“Gabrielle, you’re wandering…”

“Surely even my eyes are wandering, isn’t true, Xena? Since when it goes on with Ares?”

“It never started.”

Gabrielle placed her hand on her forehead.

“Why do I feel that I’m wasted with you?”

“Gabrielle, please…”

“Your relationship with Ares…sooner or later you have to explain it to me…I feel like I’m going crazy…”

Xena went closer tightening her and she tried to kiss her, but Gabrielle turned on the other side and lowered her eyes.

“Gabrielle, I…I lo-… Nothing.” And she stopped.

“You cannot even say it, Xena…you cannot say what you feel for me…”

“It’s not simple…”

“Yeah.”

Gabrielle wriggled out and went out of the stable.

She could feel that Xena loved her, but she also knew that it was not the right moment to discuss about it.

There were more important things to accomplish before.

**********

“Gabrielle, going to face the Sphinx is deceitful, it’s better if you stay here watching over Iris…”

“If you think she could escape, I really don’t think she will, Xena…”

Gabrielle seemed having a pretty clear idea on facts.

“…and I want to come with you, it doesn’t matter if it could or could not be dangerous!”

Bring me with you, Xena…

Those words recalled to the warrior’s mind the first time the two women have met.

Xena could not understand what Gabrielle found so special in her to the point of wanting to follow her anywhere, even to hell.

And she was sure that, if it was necessary, she would have followed her even there, with or without her consent.

“Fine, Gab. Let’s go”.

**********

Run! Stay safe!

A man with his bleeding forehead was running and screaming out loud, terrified: above him, the terrible Sphinx was gliding on Thebes’s main square, trying to grab the unfortunate citizens that could not escape.

Two women, about to enter Aphrodite’s temple, were petrified by terror exactly when the creature was about to swoop down on them, but the man, interposing between the women and the Sphinx could avoid the massacre, sacrificing himself.

This was not useful anyway, since Neris landed in front of them with the firm intention to kill them.

While she was exposing her claws, Xena’s battle cry could be heard from afar, and in a moment, almost without noticing, she had the warrior on her back, who was trying to tame her and annoy her with her sword, without exaggerating.

Neris tried many time to hurl the warrior to the ground, then, since she was not succeeding, she took off.

“Warrior, I don’t want to kill you, don’t force me to do it!”

“I could tell you the same, Neris!”

The Sphinx made real flight stunts, but Xena managed to stay well firm, until the creature didn’t swoop down on the ground, making her fall, and with a backlash threw her in the air.

Subsequently Neris, threatening, went closer to Xena with sinuous steps, who was unconscious on the ground; she lifted one of her big paws with sticking out claws, ready to sink, when suddenly she felt a strong pain on the left part of her rib cage.

Gabrielle has collected Xena’s sword, transfixing her in the best way she could.

“You…little girl…how did you dare?!?” the Sphinx turned her head towards her with an evil expression.

Gabrielle’s hands started shacking until she dropped the sword, while Neris pointed her claw on the girl’s neck, in the same point of the necklace, fitting it in and pulling it, trying to choke her, but the chain broke and the necklace flew away up high.

In that same moment, Aphrodite appeared.

“Ah, here it is!” she smiled.

The Goddess pointed her finger to the necklace, that transformed in the lost chakram and was about to fall on the warrior, still unconscious on the ground.

Xenaaaaa” Gabrielle scream out loud as strong as she could to wake her up, and Xena, a little shocked by the general chaos and by the girl’s voice, quickly grabbed her chakram with her right hand and, without losing time, she threw it against Neris, wounding her lightly on one of her paws.

“Why didn’t you kill me, warrior?” Neris licked her wound.

“I know you’re not a threat for Thebes, and Gabrielle has the solution to your riddle!”

“I…what… Xena but…?” Gabrielle was surprised.

“Yes Gabrielle, you know the answer! Come on! Expose it!”

“Well, ahem…the bloodline…the trouble…King Laius! He’s the viper in Thebes’s bosom!”

Gabrielle was pleased of herself and the Sphinx looked at her surprised.

“Exactly girl, exactly…you solved the riddle…now bring the blasphemous here and Thebes will be free! King Laius must die!”

Xena nodded with her glance.

**********

“Has it been so easy, Xena?”

“Almost as the materialization of my chakram, I can say…” she smiled.

“Xena…I didn’t know about it…”

“Yes, sure…”

“No, I swear it Xena…I could never lie to you…”

Xena looked at Gabrielle in a suspicious way, while the girl sighed, as if she had to surrender for not being believed; then at some point the Goddess of Love appeared.

“Did you come back to give me additional problems?”

“No little girl, I’m here to say a couple of things to the warrior of your heart…”

“Well? What is it?”

“You should think a little more to the girl you walk around with, Xena!”

“I’m not following you, Aphrodite.”

“The chakram, silly! I have taken it…ehm…borrowed it, thinking that you, not having your weapon anymore, would have dedicated to Gabrielle…that has eyes only for you!”

Gabrielle suddenly became completely red. Tomatoes were pale, compared to her skin, and feeling observed by Xena she felt her hear beating faster.

“It was not necessary for you to unduly take my crakram Aphrodite…but I thank you for the thought…”

“You’re always so rude, Xena! Well, I have nothing else to do here! See you soon, girls!” she blinked her eyes to both and vanished.

Gabrielle was in evident embarrassment for Aphrodite’s words, ad tried to talk about something that could divert from what had just happened.

“What are you going to do with King Laius? Do you really want to deliver it to the Sphinx?”

“Not really.”

“So…?”

“So…no.”

“I see we’re back to old manners here…fine, I will not insist…” she placed a hand in front of her and she turned on the other direction.

“Gabrielle…”

Xena grabbed the girl’s wrist, and the two women found themselves one in front of the other.

The warrior caressed Gabrielle’s face, then with the glance of who was feeling strong emotions and awkwardness, she pronounced words that the youngest would not have forgotten.

“I think I love you, Gabrielle…I believe I had always known it…”

“Do you think or do you know…?”

“I know it…”

Gabrielle suddenly jumped in Xena’s arms, who replied to that sign of affection hugging her tight.

“I thought you were never going to say it, Xena…”

“I will always tell you Gab…or at least I will try…”

Gabrielle was conscious that she could not pretend more than that from Xena, and that what she had just confessed her was much, for a person like her.

Xena went closer, and the two women exchanged a long and sweet kiss, then the warrior started to get rid the scrap metal of her armor and she jumped in the bushes with Gabrielle, who found herself upon her, starting to unfasten the bodice.

“Xena…what do you want to do…? We could not be alone…”

Xena slid from her lips to kiss her neck, arriving to the breast slightly uncovered, while Gabrielle placed her hands among the thick black hair of the warrior, alternating caresses from her arms to her waist.

The sighs of the two women were deeper and deeper, Xena was undressing Gabrielle even more and the kisses on her skin were becoming more and more daring, but something interrupted them: it was Ares.

Suddenly Xena recognized the black leather boots among the thick grass, and immediately tried to cover Gabrielle.

“Damn it! You’re mad! As well as a voyeur!”

“I’m not here for this show, even if I must admit that you’re good, Xena…” he smiled ironically.

Xena tidied herself up, she got up with Gabrielle and covered the girl, placing herself in front of her.

“…but you’re good with the wrong person…” the God added.

“What do you want, Ares?”

“I’m only inviting you to go and accomplish your duty, instead of wasting your time in effusions. Ah, how you’ve changed, Xena! Once you were my merciless warrior…now…well, it’s enough to look at you…at both of you” he grinned ironically.

“Why all of this rush, Ares?”

“Rush of justice…”

“The God of War talking about justice makes me laugh…anyway I will take care of Laius. It’s a promise I made to Neris.”

“Excellent, Xena. Try to avoid…how to say…more distractions” Ares smiled sarcastically.

The warrior welcomed that smile as a challenge and in a moment, Gabrielle found herself tight to Xena’s lips, lost in a whirling as well as unexpected kiss.

The two women continued kissing with emphasis, as if they were eating up themselves, and it was just in that moment that Ares, mad of jealousy, threw a lightning in the middle of the sky and vanished, swearing.

The lightning stroke on the ground, leaving a deep-burnt line.

The two girls barely avoided it.

“Was it necessary to cause his rage, Xena? He could have killed us…”

“Necessary and primary…look at the quicksilver color of these ashes…”

“I didn’t think that the Gods’ lightning was so precious” she smiled.

“Neither do I, Gab…”

 **********

Xena and Gabrielle, on Argo’s saddle, were going back to King Laius’ court.

“You had your chakram back, instead my stick is forever lost…”

“You have been good with the sword, but…I would never have said that…”

“Neris was going to kill you, I had to think quickly…I didn’t imagine you thought I was so poor, Xena!”

“Surely there are things about you that I didn’t consider before…I admit it…”

“Which ones?” Gabrielle was clearly curious.

“Other…things…”

Gabrielle understood what Xena was referring to, and caressed her arm lightly.

“Gab…” Xena turned around and kissed the girl gently, while Argo was running towards a dark and undefined destiny…

**********

“Take them!”

King Laius, seeing the two women arrive, gave order to his soldiers to capture them.

“Laius, tame your dogs! We are not here for…”

Xena could not finish speaking, since she was attacked suddenly, and Argo was scared and went wild, making both she and Gabrielle fall.

“Stay behind me, Gab!”
They were completely surrounded by the King’s guards, the biggest of them tried to jump on Xena, that in the attempt to protect Gabrielle ended up deeply wounded on her arm and stopped tenaciously by another soldier.
“Tie them up and imprison them immediately in the underground!”

“Let my horse in peace!” was the last thing Xena could say, before being hit on her head and pass out.

**********

King Laius’ cells were cold and humid. The musty smell was mixed to the stuffy one, making each attempt to breathe sickening. It was clear that the prison had not been used for many years. The only source of light and air was coming from a very small window, placed above the bench on which Xena was trying to rest; Gabrielle was sitting beside her and was medicating the wound in the best way she could.

“Da…damn, Gabrielle…”

“Try to stay still, Xena…the cut is very ugly…”

“I know it very well, what do you think?”

“Xena, please…let me take care of you…” Gabrielle’s sweet and reassuring tone calmed down the woman, in a clear state of suffering.

“I have no doubts that you can…I cannot see you, Gab…come closer…”

Gabrielle moved towards the slice of light gifted by the Moon and noticed, from the warrior’s feverish eyes, that she was feeling much worse than what she could imagine. The wound was surely infected.

“I will take you away from here, Xena. I promise you” and she caressed her face, feeling the sweat pouring on her fingers; touching her neck she realized not only that her heartbeat was accelerated, but the heat was not leaving any doubt on her feverish state.

“Thank you…love…”

Gabrielle was breathless. Xena never called her in that way. Surely the fever was making her delirious.

“Try to rest…”

Xena, even if her arm was wounded, took Gabrielle’s hand, then she squeezed and kissed it.

“I love you, Gabrielle…” the girl was feeling her heart beating faster and faster, but at the same time she was extremely sad, as if those words could be the last pronounced by her warrior.

“Me too, Xena…since the first days when I decided to follow you…I fell in love with you…”

“I know…”

Xena drifted in a tormented and deep sleep, while Gabrielle turned towards the glimmer of light.

**********

Gabrielle was walking nervously back and forth in the cell, trying to find a solution to go out from that gloomy place and save Xena, but she had no idea about how she could do it.

“Gab…Gabrielle…I…I’m cold…”

“For all Gods, Xena…”

Xena was clearly getting worse.

She tried to warm her, tightening the woman to herself, but she knew it was not going to help much.

“If only I could go out of here…oh Xena, how much I would want to have your strength and your spirit…” and while she was starting to cry, she could hear a whisper coming from outside.

Looking out, she could see the same scenario of the previous night: Iris and Neris together; this time however the clear sky and the silence all around made everything widely sharp.

Iris placed in Neris’ paws some toys and sweets, then she covered her head with a wrap and she stepped away from the Sphinx, that even this time took off until she disappeared far away.

Gabrielle had no doubts anymore on what Iris was doing, and she tried to call her, screaming as much as possible.

“Iris! Iris, please! Stop! Iris!”

The woman stopped right in front of the small cell window.

“What do you want? I cannot stay here!”

“Iris, you should help us! Xena is sick!”

“I…I can’t, Gabrielle…I’m sorry…”

“Xena could die! Please, help us…”

“I…I don’t…”

“If Xena dies, I am going to tell Laius about your secret…”

“My…? What? No, you can’t…you don’t know…”

“I know everything, Iris…I’m sorry to threaten you but the life of the woman I love is at risk…and even your heart is full of love…I know it…help me, Iris, and I will help you…”

“Tell me what you need, Gabrielle…”

**********

Iris came back to the cell window of the Royal Palace, stealthily bringing to Gabrielle all the needed to medicate Xena, and a candle to make as much light as possible.

“Ok, now give me the honey, I will try to bind the wound in the best way I can…”

“Hurry up, Gabrielle…oh, if Laius would discover me! He is going to kill me!

“He won’t, Iris…he’s not capable of…”

“What are you saying, Gabrielle?!?”

“Listen to me, Iris, you risked a lot coming here…and I thank you for that…please believe to what I’m telling you…trust me…”

The girl caressed Xena’s face, which was still showing signs of suffering; Iris, seeing that move, could not help but feeling tenderness.

“You must love her very much…”

“Xena is who I live for…I would do anything for her…”

“I understand you, I would do anything for my children…”

**********

The night passed in a very rowdy way for Xena, between fever and pain.

Gabrielle prayed the Gods that she could recover quickly, because seeing her suffering in that way was killing her, especially when she was delirious, the fear she could not make it was attacking her.

“Gabrielle…”

“Yes Xena, I’m here…”

Gabrielle grabbed Xena’s hand, then she caressed her face and noticed that she was still sweaty, while the voice tone was becoming weaker and weaker.

“Gabrielle, I…”

“Xena, please, you should not stress yourself…rest…”

Gabrielle was feeling a lump in her throat and as if she had a rock suffocating her breast. In that moment Xena was not the brave and strong warrior, but a woman who was physically weakened and struggling to survive.

Xena was a demigoddess to Gabrielle’s eyes, an unbreakable hero.

She was used to be always saved.

She was always accepting any decision the warrior could take, since she was wiser.

She was strongly rescued, even if she was only about to fall.

Now it was Xena who needed all of that, and Gabrielle, despite she was partly feeling inappropriate, maybe because she was too used to be always the girl to be rescued from troubles, wanted to give her all of that.

She took a deep breath. Then she changed the medication again.

**********

Gabrielle lied down next to Xena, she was very tired but she couldn’t nor wanted to fall asleep; a few moments later the warrior woke up.

“Gab…”

The girl, as soon as she felt pronouncing her name, tried to get up, but Xena stopped her.

“No, Gab…stay beside me…”

“Xena…how are you feeling…?”

“As if the whole Mount Olympus fell upon me…” she smiled.

“You cannot avoid making jokes even when you’re sick, Xena…”

The warrior tried to sit, but she couldn’t, so Gabrielle embraced her back with an arm and let the warrior lay down on her.

“Are you comfortable?”

“I’d like to be always so comfortable…”

Gabrielle felt embarrassed.

“Do I still make you nervous?”

“Yes, Xena…”

“Then you are going to feel even more now, for what I am about to tell you, Gabrielle…”

Xena suddenly became serious, and stared in Gabrielle’s eyes.

“I don’t know if I can make it through…”

“You have a tough skin, Xena…”

“Please, Gab…let me finish…”

A sad silence then accompanied the warrior’s words.

“I don’t know how this is going to end, Gab…this place is a grave and maybe it is amplifying my fears…if only I was feeling better…we would have gone away from here…”

“I know, Xena…sadly I…”

“You will be a great warrior, Gabrielle, with or without me…”

Gabrielle smiled sadly.

“With you, not without you…Xena…”

“I would have never imagined I was going to end my days here…in the prison of a King without backbone…”

“So you also understood…”

“Yes, Gab, the plan behind all of this could not have been made by Laius…he’s too naïve or too stupid…it was…it was Ares…”

Xena started to feel bad again, the rest seemed over.

Gabrielle tightened Xena.

“Don’t be sad, Gabrielle…you know…I…damn my arm is hurting so much…

“Xena, I will do anything to save you, please, don’t give up!”

“Gab, if we go away from here, I… want to stay with you…for all my life…”

Gabrielle was overwhelmed by a strong emotion, she wanted to be in her arms and tell her how much she loved her, but Xena’s conditions and the situation didn’t allow that.

“No…I must find a solution…we cannot stay here any longer!”

Placing her hand on the cell walls, she could feel they were very wet. She started scratching them with her nails and she realized that the soil between a brick and the other was mixed to some musk, and that it didn’t seem difficult to remove it.

She tried to do the same thing with the ones below the small window, and she could notice that the mold was even softer.

She took Xena’s chakram and the removal was extremely simple.

“I’m lucky that Xena is not herself and she cannot see what I’m doing with her ring…I’m sure she would not approve it…” she thought, speaking aloud.

“But I’m doing it for you, Xena…I will not let you die here!! Well…it is surrendering…if only I had more strength…”

Gabrielle managed to weaken the most part of the bricks below, then she had an idea:

“Argo! But that horse is only reacting to Xena’s call…I will try it anyway! The stable is not very far, thank Gods…she should hear me…”

Gabrielle whistled several times, but Argo did not react.

“Stupid stubborn horse!”

“Don’t ever try to talk in this way to Argo, Gab…”

Xena heard her, and in a moment of clarity, with all the breath left in her lungs, called Argo, that did not take long to arrive.

“Argo! Kick here! Come on!”

Argo looked at Gabrielle, who was spurring her from the window, but she seemed she didn’t want to understand, while Xena was too exhausted to give her orders again.

“Fine! Now I will try to whistle like Xena!”

Gabrielle only managed to release squeaky sounds, that made the horse move away.

“Damn it! Ok…let’s try again…!” and this time Gabrielle managed to let Argo understand, she kicked on the wall, breaking the side excavated by the girl.

“Xena, Xena! We’re free! Xena, wake up!”

For all Gods! How can I get you up? Xena…please…help me…”

Gabrielle caressed her, then she kissed her forehead and noticed that she was not so warm anymore; then Xena seemed to wake up.

“Hold on to me, Xena…”

“You made it, Gab…I’m proud of you…” she smiled.

Xena managed to stand up on her feet, holding onto Gabrielle’s shoulders, while the girl was holding her firmly on her waist.

The warrior was too weak to walk, and the only way to hurry up was undoubtedly riding the horse, but Xena didn’t have enough strength to get on, so she decided to go first.

“Xena, hold on to me! Try to get on, I’ll hold you!”

“Gabrielle, I don’t know if it’s the case…”

“I’m stronger than you think, Xena!”

Gabrielle was firm, and the proud and determined glance of the girl inspired trust in the warrior.

With a hand, she was holding the bridles and with the other, she tried to lift Xena up with all her strength, for a couple of times she was slipping away, until she could get her on Argo’s saddle.

Xena tightened Gabrielle, as if she had never done in all her warlord’s life, while the girl was hoping to go away as far as they could from Laius’ reign and save her woman.

**********

They arrived to an inn, far enough from Thebes center; Gabrielle was tired, but not as much as Xena, who was exhausted.

“Xena, stay leaning on me.”

Entering the guesthouse, Gabrielle noticed a group of men sitting at a table, who were looking at them laughing.

Careless, she went to the innkeeper.

“We need a room. How much are you asking for one night?”

The innkeeper seemed of the same mood of his customers.

“It depends…what you need it for?” he smiled, amused.

“You know, it never happened to me to host two women, ahah.”

“There’s always a first time. Now, would you tell me the price?”

“For two women, weird like you…seven dinars!”

“You’re mad!”

“I repeat you, blondie, you’re weird and the prices increase for the ones like you…”

“The ones like…”

“Gabrielle, give him those dinars. I need to rest…”

“Ok, Xena…”

Gabrielle placed the dinars on the counter.

The innkeeper counted them and then looked at the two women with scorn.

“That way for the rooms. Try not to make too much noise, ahahahah.”

Gabrielle barely held back her rage.

**********

They entered in the room.

Gabrielle placed her saddlebag on a small seat, along with Xena’s armor, then they both sat on the bed.

“Luckily the room is clean and the bed seems to be comfortable…how are you feeling, Xena?”

“Better, even if…”

“Even if?”

“I’m starting to feel hungry, but I don’t want you to go among those men…”

“I’m going to take you something now!”

“No, wait Gab…maybe tomorrow we are going to search for an inn in…”

“Don’t ever think about it, Xena. You must regain strength. I’m not sure you’re ok, yet. Lay down and rest. I will be back soon.”

Gabrielle caressed Xena’s face, and she took her hand and kissed her, then the girl went out of the room.

**********

“Hey beauty, where did you leave your friend?”

One of the men in the inn, clearly drunk, had decided to bother Gabrielle, who however did not reply to the defiance.

“I’d like some bread and cheese, please” the girl made her request to the innkeeper, careless of the laughs in the background.

“All you want for twenty dinars!”

“I don’t own such an amount and I perfectly know that is not what I should pay you! Enough!”

“Hey girl, you’re the weirdo, so you must be satisfied or else stay without food ahahaha!”

Gabrielle lost her patience and grabbed the innkeeper for the scruff, he remained surprised.

“Stop it! Give me what I asked for, at the right price!”

“Hey guys, have you seen that? The chicken has her claws…”

The drunk man got up and, together with other two, surrounded Gabrielle, who hit the drunk one with her head, managing to sneak out.

Then she run towards one of the windows of the inn, took the stick that was used to keep it open, and she started to bustle.

She gave a sting on the stomach of one of them and on the head of the other. Then she stopped.

“Do you want some more?”

The men run away, out of the inn, at the speed of light.

“And what are you looking at?” Gabrielle talked to two women who were in a corner, afraid.

“Instead of passively accepting who wants to oppress you, maybe you should do something! And you, innkeeper, prepare what I have asked you!”

“Yyyy…yes im…immediately.” The innkeeper was clearly shocked by Gabrielle’s reaction and hurried to satisfy her request.

**********

Gabrielle went back in the room, put down the food and saw Xena playing with the chakram; then she turned towards her and smiled with her bright blue eyes.

“I saw you, you know?”

“What?

“I’ve seen how you fought against those bad guys. Sooner or later you will also be able to held my chakram, and not only using it as a rake…” she laughed lightly, self-satisfied.

“Oh Xena, forgive me, I…”

“Don’t apologize, Gab. You saved my life and I will always acknowledge you for that. You’re becoming a true warrior. I was not joking when I told you that one day you will be able to use my chakram…even if I would be probably dead when it is going to happen” this time, a veil of sadness could be caught in Xena’s smile.

“It’s never going to happen, now try to eat something…”

Gabrielle offered food to the warrior, she sat beside her and caressed her hand.

“You’re the most important person of my life, Xena…”

The warrior caressed her back, they looked into each other’s eyes, to exchange a sweet and tender kiss on the lips afterwards.

**********

It was dawning when Gabrielle was woken up by the noise of a light rain, that was slowly watering the leaves on the trees. Initially, still sleepy, she thought of being outside, instead she noticed that the window was lightly opened, as much as needed for her to hear that sweet sound of nature.

Next to her, Xena was sleeping peacefully.

It would have been unusual to see her like that, if the warrior was not wounded, since she was always the one getting up early and waking her up, so she tried to wake her caressing and kissing her face softly several times, until she opened her eyes.

“How are you?”

“Much better, Gab”

“Let me check your wound…”

Gabrielle delicately made sure of the wound state, then she changed the medicament.

“Finally it is not infected anymore…”

Xena got up quite confidently, and Gabrielle recognized her beloved warrior.

“Thank you…you have been so precious…even if now we should go. There are still several things to fix. Laius surely moved already, to hunt us…better, what do you tell me about Iris? When I was feeling bad I vaguely heard you talking about a secret…”

“Iris’ children are alive, Xena…”

**********

Xena and Gabrielle found themselves under Mount Ficione, exactly on the same road on which, some days before, the victims of the Sphinx were laying on the ground; now there were only burned sand and ashes.

Xena got off the horse: something caught her attention.

“It doesn’t seem to me that the Sphinxes spit flames like dragons” Xena was touching and pushing the sand with her hands, letting it slide down from her fingers.

“Look, Xena!”

Neris glided in front of the two women, while Laius was arriving from behind, escorted by his army, heavily armed.

“Xena, running away didn’t help you! You betrayed me and you will be very very punished! I knew I could not trust you for real! Your reputation will always precede you!” Laius was wearing an extremely heavy armor, and his voice was resounding inside the helmet, releasing a creaking sound.

“And you, Neris! You will never have me! Kill the Sphinx and the two traitors!”

Laius pointed his arm ordering to attack in the direction of Xena and Gabrielle, and almost fell on the ground because of the weight of his own armor, until a couple of soldiers didn’t support him.

After that, one of them stroke an arrow in the direction of the girl, but Xena stopped it skillfully with a hand, throwing it back on the King’s helmet, and it remained stuck.

“Laius, you’re ridiculous! Neris won’t kill you and you won’t kill her!”

“Look around, burnt sand and silver ashes! The dead bodies that were here until the other day are gone!”

“It is true, warrior” Neris added.

“This because among the Sphinx’s victims there were also soldiers…coming from one of Ares’ army!”

“Ares?” Laius was surprised.

Xena was not only determined, but also seemed to have something else for both parties, so she mounted on Argo’s saddle and waved to Gabrielle to reach her on the steed.

“Follow us! We are all going to meet in Thebes’s main square!”

**********

The two women were riding quickly towards Thebes, then Gabrielle, very curious, started to make questions.

“Would you tell me what Ares has to do with it?”

“Ares wanted to kill two birds with one stone…become the new city protector, kill Laius and proclaim his heir.”

“Yes, but…how?”

“With deception, Gab…the only way the God of War knows. Very soon everything will be clear for everybody”.

“Ah, I understand…your usual old mysteries…”

**********

Gabrielle was holding tight to Xena’s waist and noticed that the wounded shoulder had been touched by the arrow shot by Laius soldier.

“Xena, stop.”

“What?” Xena stopped Argo’s run, then got off the horse and made even Gabrielle getting off.

“Your shoulder is bleeding…”

“And you asked me to stop for this?”

“Yes…”

Gabrielle, under Xena’s eyes, started to lick her shoulder with the lips, then with her tongue she wiped the blood that had not coagulated yet.

The warrior felt surprise and excitement at the same time, watching the girl who seemed to want everything of her, and this time she did not let the desire of both fade because of the impendent mission. She pushed Gabrielle with strength against a tree inside a small forest, starting to kiss her, feeling the metallic taste of her own blood.

“Take off your armor, Xena…”

The warrior, very quickly and with ease, got rid of it, pushing this time her body against the girl’s body and sliding her hands on the girl’s hips, hugging her tight.

“Xena…we’re not far enough from…”

“I don’t care…” she kept kissing and touching her vehemently.

“You really feel better, Xen…” she closed her mouth with a hand.

“Don’t speak.”

Xena kissed Gabrielle’s neck with heat, who closed her eyes and smiled: her warrior was having her soul and body, careless about everything and everyone.

**********

“Here we are Sire, but the warriors have not reached us yet!” one of Laius’ soldiers was looking around to make sure of the two women’s arrival.

“A great sovereign should never have to wait!” The King was furious and Neris was looking at him with a scornful look, while she was licking her wing.

“I will order to cut them!”

“Stop it, Laius!” Xena and Gabrielle arrived before the planned time.

“What are you going to show us, Xena?” Neris asked politely.

“Exactly here, where Crisippo’s execution took place, there are the same ashes and sand that we have found under Mount Ficione!

“And what does it mean?” Laius was losing her balance again, because of the armor.

“That you did not execute Crisippo, but an impostor instead!”

“It is not true, Xena! He was Crisippo, I’m more than sure!”

“Have you seen him dead, Laius?”

“Now that I’m thinking about it…we have only collected his ashes from the stake…”

“Those ashes were not Crisippo’s…your wife didn’t cheat on you with him, so there won’t be another bloodshed!”

Moreover, exactly when Xena pronounced those fateful words, Ares appeared, the God of War, that stroke one of his lightning against her, but the warrior was much quicker, throwing the chakram against him; this weakened the electric discharge, that faded on the ground.

“Look! The same color of burnt sand! The same silver ashes produced by your lightning, Ares!” Xena took a handful of that sand and threw it on the God’s face.

“Congratulations, my warrior princess…but this doesn’t mean anything! Laius shall die! What are you waiting for, Neris?”

“Neris won’t kill Laius, since Crisippo was never executed, you introduced yourself to Iris in disguise and you raped her!”

“And for what reason should I have planned all of this? It’s ridiculous” he sneered.

“For useless reasons and to enslave Thebes city, and also to get rid of Neris” from below one of the Sphinx’s wings, Iris showed up.

FLASHBACK: MOUNT FICIONE, SOME MONTHS AGO

During a strong storm, Iris, soaked of water and mud, was running from the King’s soldiers, in the attempt of saving her children’s life.

Once arrived near Mount Ficione, she placed the newborns on the Sacred Stone: the Sphinx was in front of her.

“Please Neris, take my children, Laius wants to kill them!

“Iris, if your children are coming with me, you will not see them again…are you aware of that?”

“I don’t care…I prefer not to see them again, than to assist to their death under my eyes!”

“Fine…from today they will be sons of the Reign of Seth and Laius will die for having tried to kill some innocents!”

END OF THE FLASHBACK

“So you have not cheated on me, Iris?”

“I was already pregnant of our children when Crisippo, or at least the one I thought was him, one night took advantage of me……”

“And that man was Ares…” Gabrielle added.

“I could not tell you Laius, I was too ashamed…”

“It was not your fault, Iris” Gabrielle hugged the woman, who burst into tears.

Laius took the help of his soldiers to get rid of that boring and cumbersome armor, and run towards Iris.

“Forgive me, I could have never imagined all of this…”

Laius tried to hug her, but she moved away.

“So was it all Ares’ miserable plan? For what?” the Sphinx’s voice thundered through the entire main square.

“For a heir and some temples in his honor” sighed Gabrielle.

“God’s stuff” Laius continued.

“Or mad people, right Ares?” Xena did not hesitate to mock the God even more.

The Sphinx took the word:

“I am Neris, protector of this city, and I am not going to let a cruel and vain God make these human creatures, that I love so much, unhappy. You have earned yourself my wrath.”

Neris issued a sharp sound, similar to a hiss, but more disturbing.

“I have just called my sisters for gathering, now they are flying towards Mount Olympus. They are going to make you and all you stupid Gods pay for it!”

“Sisters? This is even more ridiculous.” Ares mocked at the Sphinx in a way that she did not accept at all, and when he tried to run away, Neris materialized an ice plate with a blow, making him slip, then she crushed his back with one of her paws, but Ares, who was immortal after all, managed to break free, disappearing in front of everyone.

“Stupid and miserable God! Run away is not going to help you!” Neris snorted, then she moved towards Iris with elegant and harmonious steps.

“Lady, you have suffered so much. You took care of your children with humbleness, even if distant, and I want to gift you something”

From afar, in a clear sky, two big Golden Eagles were coming: each of them was bringing a child with her. When they were gliding on the ground, Iris was astonished and Neris smiled.

“But they are not my children…”

“In the Reign of Seth the children grow fast and they become demigods. Thebes has now two Kings!”

“I am the only legitimate King of Thebes!” Laius intervened.

“You are not a fair man, Laius. The riddle has been solved anyway and you are free, but the Kingdom belongs to Iris and to her two children! Take or…die!”

Desolate, Laius lowered his head and accepted his destiny.

Iris run to embrace her children, between joy and tears.

**********

That night, in what was not Laius’ Kingdom anymore, Iris organized a party in honor of her sons and the two warriors.

“I only want to tell you that I don’t know how to thank you, but instead I know. So I asked to fill your saddlebags with food and golden dinars, and just know that here in Thebes you have a place of honor. You will always be the most welcome.”

“And we could not refuse such goodness” Xena added.

“We are so immensely happy that you and your sons have reunited.” Gabrielle was definitely more romantic of the warrior, in her reply.

“Please stay here for the night, the guestroom is still yours, with a small gift for both of you.”

Iris smiled and gave her farewell.

“You’re always so practical, right Xena?”

“I’d say we have widely deserved all of this!”

“What did the Queen gift us?”

“To find out, we should enter in our room…”

“Ah, right.”

**********

The two women entered in their room, and Gabrielle noticed as first thing that her stick was leaning on the window.

“I cannot believe it! I thought it was forever lost!”

“Are you going to use it again, Gab?”

“Why shouldn’t I?!?”

“You fought well against those guys at the inn, I think you could focus on another kind of weapon, from now on…”

“Your chakram?”

“Never! I don’t want you to think about using it to grow turnips, next time!!”

“Very, very funny, Xena!… Hey, look!”

They noticed that the room was very different than the one Laius had asked to prepare the first time; completely decorated with blue flowers and the sheets had the same exact color.

“Why all these flowers?!?” Xena was disappointed.

“They are iris flowers, and they symbolize faith and hope.”

“Hope killed men more than sword.”

“You’re always so devastating, Xena, why should hope kill?”

“Because it is illusory and ephemeral, like love.”

“Do you think that even my love for you is like that?”

Xena stayed silent. The straightforwardness of the girl and the word ‘love’ made her flinching, then she became a little gloomy and sat on the bed.

Gabrielle went closer in front of her, placing herself between her legs, and she placed her arms around Xena’s neck.

“In this way we have almost the same height…” the warrior joked a little and smiled.

“Xena, what do you think is happening on Mount Olympus with Neris’ sisters?”

“Do you really care…?”

“No…I was thinking instead that when we lay down our heights are coinciding even more…”

THE END
